A Rudolph Boy Scout made an observation deck at a Wood County park for his Eagle project.
On March 9, an Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held at the Knights of Pythias Hall in Bloomdale to formally recognize Jacob Daniel Benedict for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.
He is the son of James and Marcia Benedict of Rudolph. He is a member of Erie Shores Council, BSA Troop 337 of Bloomdale. Scoutmaster for Troop 337 is Jay Hahn.
Benedict completed his Eagle Scout project in July. He planned and supervised the construction of an observation deck and footbridge for Cricket Cove Park, a part of the Wood County Park District. The project was funded by a donation of materials and labor and included fundraising of nearly $300 to supplement the donations. The project was completed in over 400 work hours, with the assistance of family, friends and his troop.
Benedict is a 2012 graduate of Elmwood High School. While at Elmwood, he was a member of National Honor Society, graduating with a 3.5 GPA or above; a four-year letterman in cross country, and was a four-year member of the Elmwood band.
In 2012 he was selected as the winner of the Director's Award for band and voted outstanding percussionist. He also played junior varsity ice hockey with the Greater Columbus Area High School Hockey Association. He was team MVP and team captain in 2012.
He attends Penn State University, Behrend Campus, at Erie, Pa. He is majoring in forensic science and a member of the Behrend Lions Hockey Team.
As part of the Eagle Scout Court of Honor, he received special recognition from the Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn and Wood County Commissioner Doris Herringshaw. The Liberty Township Trustees named him Outstanding Youth Citizen of Liberty Township.
Scouting is a family affair for the Benedicts. His father is treasurer for Troop 337. His grandfather, Clarence Benedict, was a Scout in Vermont.
