MILLBURY - The Lake Young Runners Club continues to develop and grow.
The group, which also includes children from the Eastwood School District, has added track and field events, such as long jump and hurdles, into the programming. Organizer Ruben Viramontez Anguiano said some of the events are adapted for younger children,
"We constructed hurdles that were appropriate to the children's height and age," Anguiano said. "The shot put, we used a soft ball. For the runs we based the distance and sprints based on the grade of the children.
Children in grades kindergarten and first ran the 40-yard dash and ran no longer than the 800. The older children ran farther.
At a meet earlier this month at Lake High School, approximately 40 children from Perrysburg, Oregon, Rossford and Toledo joined the Lake and Eastwood kids.
Nick Mack, 10, runs and wins the 800 meter race during the Lake Young Runners Club at Lake high school.
Vincent Smoot, 6, of Walbridge, takes part in the hurdles.
Lake Elementary secured a grant that focused on running, health and leadership for the Wood County rural area schools. The grant also provides students scholarships for admission to events and to buy shoes. Lake Elementary secured the grant through the Bill Rowles Youth Fund at the Toledo Community Foundation. The grant director is Lake Elementary Principal Christie McPherson.
The Lake Young Runner's Club, presented by the Rural Running Project, is having a Cross Country Camp June 24-26 at Pearson Park. It is for children in grades kindergarten through six.
