Jehyeong Lee, an eighth-grader, won first place in the Portage Lions Club 2013-14 Peace Poster Contest held at Bowling Green Middle School.
The runner-up was Cheyenne Carter, a seventh-grader.
Nineteen students entered the contest, organized by art teachers Kim Sockman and Cynthia Marso.  They made their rooms available for students to work on posters after school or during academic assist.  Students could use any media for their posters.
The theme was "Our World, Our Future."
Students were to express this vision in their artwork.  The contest was open to youth who are 11, 12 or 13.
Jehyeong, Cheyenne and their parents were honored at a dinner held Oct. 28 in Portage.  Both students received certificates and cash awards for their drawings.
The Peace Poster Contest is an international contest sponsored by Lions Club International.
It has been held for over 25 years, with over 4 million youth from over 100 countries participating.
Jehyeong's poster will be entered into the district Lions contest. The local district includes 11 counties in Northwest Ohio and has almost 50 clubs.
The winning poster will be submitted to the state competition.  Eventually, one winner will be selected from entries around the world.
Last year's international winner was from California.  Past winners have been from Brazil, India, Lebanon, and South Africa.  This is the second year for the Portage Lions Club to sponsor the contest.  For more information, visit www.lionsclub.org.
