American Legion Buckeye Boys State will be held June 9-16 at Bowling Green State University.
The following Wood County boys, all juniors in high school, have been selected to attend.
Additional students attending Buckeye Boys State will run next week. Information and photos can still be sent to Debbie Rogers, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . If any boys were initially selected as alternates, but are now attending BBS, e-mail that information to Rogers. Girls State information is also welcome.
Representing the Wood County Council are Zachary Hendricks, Garrett Kingsley, Noah Lanning, Judson McDaniel and Nathan Sell.
Hendricks attends Bowling Green High School where he is in lacrosse and First Amendment clubs. He is a Global Connections volunteer. The son of Deborah Hendricks and James Hendricks, he is a 2007 Wood County Quiz Bowl champion and a National Honor Society member.
An Eagle Scout, Kingsley participates in cross country, track, Spanish Club, Christian Service, and Ski and Snowboard Club at St. John's Jesuit High School in Toledo. He is the son of Theresa Kingsley.
At BGHS, Lanning is involved in cross country, track, Model U.N., FFA and drama and archery clubs. A Boy Scout, he is also a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church youth group and the German Honor Society. He is the son of Rodney and Amy Lanning, Bowling Green.
McDaniel, of Portage, goes to BGHS where he is involved in varsity soccer, jazz and marching bands and French Club. He is a soccer coach. The son of Bruce and Carrie McDaniel, he is on the honor roll and is a member of the French National Honor Society.
Sell, Bowling Green, participates in soccer, track and Key Club at BGHS. He has been varsity soccer captain and is a member of First United Methodist Church. He is the son of Brian and Debra Sell.
The Wood County Council American Legion, Perrysburg, is sending Scott Cunnings, Raphael Fretter, Steven Gerdeman and Christopher Schaffer.
The son of John and Kim Cunnings, Cunnings is in the marching band and participates in speech and debate at Perrysburg High School. A Life Scout in the Boy Scouts, he serves as a patrol leader.
Fretter attends Otsego High School where he participates in cross country and the concert and marching bands. He is a recipient of the Otsego Exemplary Attendance Award. He is the son of Aaron and Jennifer Fretter.
Gerdeman, son of Carl and Diane Gerdeman, attends BGHS. He is a soccer letterman.
Schaffer is a NHS member and plays varsity golf at Rossford High School. He has been awarded the scholar athlete award and is active in Boy Scouts with a life rank. He is the son of Kathleen and Michael Schaffer.
Bradner American Legion 338 Albert Bowe post is sponsoring Mitchell Beaverson, Mac Flanagan, Jacob Houtz, Nolan Kerr, Jack Raymond and Justin Walton.
At Elmwood High School, Beaverson participates in FFA, NHS and student council. The son of Jeff and Landi Beaverson, he is also a member of Golden Key 4-H and Wood County Junior Fair Board. He is also active on the family farm.
Flanagan participates in Skills USA, wrestling, football, track, weightlifting, FFA, NHS and Varsity L Club at Elmwood. The son of Adam Flanagan and Drew and Tammy Smith, he is a member of St. James Church, president of Vanguard Auto-Collision and football captain.
Houtz is in NHS, Spanish Club, musicals, concert choir, the Troubadors and the marching, pep, jazz and concert bands at Elmwood. The son of Doug and Gail Houtz, he is a volunteer for the Wayne Fire Department, and a member of the Elmwood Community Choir, Gibsonburg Faith UMC Choir and All-State Ohio Music Education Association Choir. He also bowls.
Kerr is active in varsity football, varsity basketball, NHS, engineering club and pep, marching and concert bands at Elmwood. The son of Jack and Rosanne Kerr, he is a member of Mt. Zion youth group and St. Thomas More Catholic University Parish.
At Lakota High School, Raymond is student council president and a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions, NHS and Student Athletic Council. He plays varsity football and varsity baseball. The son of John and Amy Raymond, he attended the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Camp, the National Student Council Conference and the Camp Perry MAL Leadership Seminar, and served on the Ohio Youth Philanthropy Council.
The son of Doug and Robin Walton, Walton plays basketball and is a member of Spanish Club at Elmwood.
Jeffrey Wilson, Perrysburg, is sponsored by the Walter Weller Post 135, Toledo. He attends Lake High School and plays golf, hockey and baseball.
