Area teens selected for Buckeye Girls State

Several Wood County teenagers are attending Buckeye Girls State this week at the University of Mount
Union.
Buckeye Girls State is a week-long program designed to educate Ohio’s young women in the duties,
privileges, rights and responsibilities of good citizenship. Delegates learn about city, county, and
state government.
The following Wood County juniors are attending:
Tontogany American Legion auxiliary unit 441 is sponsoring Anna Kaiser. The daughter of Joseph and
Kathleen Kaiser, she is active in National Honor Society, prom committee, chorale and musicals at Otsego
High School.
American Legion Post 45 in Bowling Green is sponsoring Sasha Lanning,
Lanning is active in cross country, track, French Club and orchestra at Bowling Green High School. She
also teaches Sunday school, does numerous service projects and babysits. She is the daughter of Rod and
Amy Lanning.
Maghan Purney, Elena Kirkbride and Morgan Getz are being sponsored by the Pemberville American Legion
Post 183 Auxiliary.
Purney plays on the Eastwood High School basketball team, and is a member of the National Honor Society,
student council and Junior Executive Council. She volunteers at the Wood County Humane Society. She is
the daughter of Gina and Greg Purney.
Kirkbride is a member of choir, Key Club, NHS and is a mentor for incoming freshmen. She is also a member
of the track and field team. The daughter of Jeffery and Ritika Kirkbride, she is active in her church
youth group, volunteers and is a counselor at sixth-grade camp and at Diabetes Children’s Camp.
Getz is involved with NHS and International Club. She participate in varsity softball and varsity
volleyball. She attends and volunteers at Cedar Creek Church and works at Fleitz Pumpkin Farm in the
fall. She is the daughter of Julie and Eric Getz.
Delegates that are attending from Luckey are Reagan Boice, Caitlin Clay, Morgan Donaldson, Jayme Evans
and Jaci Juergens.
Boice is a member of the varsity soccer, varsity basketball and the track and field teams. She is on the
Junior Executive Council. She is a junior auxiliary member and is on AAU basketball. She is the daughter
of Dean and Heather Ameling.
Clay is a member of student council, International Club and varsity softball. The daughter of Cory and
Linda Clay, she is a member of Saint John XXIII Catholic Parish and is a hostess at Chili’s.
Donaldson is a varsity soccer team member. She is on the All-American FC travel soccer team and is a
member of Cedar Creek Church and junior auxiliary. The daughter of Brandon and Kristi Donaldson, she
works at Wendy’s.
Evans is a member of Key Club, Junior Executive Council and People Inc. She dances and is an assistant
teacher at Julie’s Dance Studio. The daughter of Dave and Terri Evans, she also participates in track
and field and cheerleading.
Juergens is a member of student council, Junior Executive Council, Art Club, International Club, and
plays volleyball. The daughter of Jim and Melinda Juergens, she volunteers at Vacation Bible School and
plays club volleyball at Glass City Volleyball Clinic. She is a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Weston American Legion Auxiliary Unit 409 has selected delegate Katlyn Kendall. She is the daughter of
Shad and Rhonda Kendall and attends Otsego High School where she is involved in football and basketball
cheerleading. She is also a five-year member in 4-H. She plans to campaign for a senate office.
The Albert Bowe American Legion Auxiliary in Bradner has selected Elizabeth Graber and Paige Paxson from
Lakota High School. Attending from Elmwood High school are Kortney Gonyer, Heather Ickes, Margaret
Tuite, Koleen Avery, Allison Hummel and Sarah Williams (photo not provided). Monica Ashenfelter from
Perrysburg High School is also being sponsored.
Graber is the daughter of Ronald and Josephine Graber. She is student council president, a mentor for
middle school students, and a member of show choir, NHS, quiz bowl, volleyball and musicals.
Paxson participates in basketball, volleyball, track and field, band, yearbook and varsity L. The
daughter of Nick and Angie Clark, she works at Independence House.
The daughter of Robert and Michelle Gonyer, Gonyer is a member of art club, science club, musicals and
varsity cheerleading. She is active in community choir, 4-H and the Wayne Church of Christ.
Ickes is active in band, NHS, student council, prom committee and golf. She is the daughter of Christine
Valencia and Tracy Ickes.
Tuite participates in golf, band and prom committee and is the secretary of the junior class. The
daughter of Michelle and Don Tuite, she works at the Country Farmhouse in Wayne.
Avery is the daughter of Michael Avery and Lisa Palmer. She participates in marching, pep, jazz and
concert bands, cheerleading, softball, prom committee, science club, foreign language club and NHS. She
is also the junior class president. She belongs to 4-H, Farm Crafters, and the SonFire youth group and
band.
Hummel is in marching, concert, pep and jazz bands and NHS. The daughter of Lori and Terry Hummel, she is
a member of Union United Methodist Church in Fostoria and a participant in the Ohio Music Education
Association.
Williams is active in volleyball, softball, NHS and the newspaper staff. The daughter of Susan Williams,
she does community service with the Salvation Army and Youth Olympics.
Ashenfelter has been student council vice president and executive press secretary. She is active in drama
club, track, cross country, NHS, DECA and Spanish Club. The daughter of Robert Ashenfelter, she is a
member of Zoar Lutheran youth group and is a vacation bible school leader. She has attended several
mission trips.
