NORTH BALTIMORE - Festivities start Saturday morning with a "whack" and end at night with a huge "bang," as the village hosts its annual Summer Fest. North Baltimore High School alumni will start the day by whacking golf balls at Birch Run, with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. Children may compete in a fishing derby at the park at 8 a.m. Registration is at 7:45 a.m. Several key events of Summer Fest will begin at 9 a.m. After the national anthem is performed, the car show, and craft show/flea market area will both open. Awards for the car show will be given away at 3 p.m., but vendors in the craft show/flea market area are expected to be open until 8 p.m. The Jack Patterson 5K Memorial Run also begins at 9 a.m., following registration which opened at 7:30 a.m. The run starts and finishes at the fire station at Main and Broadway. Runners will be divided into eight age groups.
Contests include a Diaper Derby at 10 a.m. on West Broadway; pet show behind the North Baltimore Public Library also at 10 a.m.; hula hoop contest at 11 a.m. and a pedal push for adults at 2 p.m., both on West Broadway; and a corn hole tournament at 5 p.m. in the old Huntington Bank lot. A quilt show will be on display in the North Baltimore Public Library, beginning at 10 a.m. In addition to food vendors downtown, the North Baltimore Fire Department is hosting a hog roast at noon, and the Eagles will have a chicken barbecue at 4:30 p.m. A beer garden will be open on East Broadway at noon. The fire department will begin holding bingo at 1 p.m. at the fire hall. There will also be rides for children, a 50/50 raffle and live music. The evening concludes at the park with fireworks at dark. The display is expected to be larger than the 2009 show. Most of the events require registration. Forms to participate in the 5K run, the craft show/flea market, car show, pet show and corn hole tournament can be found on-line at http://nbacc.org/NB_SummerFest. For over 25 years volunteers have hosted a festival downtown. It was previously known as the Good Ole Summertime Festival and was always held the last Saturday of July. For several years the event was moved to the village's park, but has returned to the downtown area in recent years. The event is organized by the North Baltimore Area Chamber of Commerce.
