Bernthisel_SatFeature_storyTONTOGANY - Baley Bernthisel enjoys being active.
The Otsego High School senior is busy athletically and academically, excelling on and off the court.
The 5-foot-10 Bernthisel will earn her fourth letter in both volleyball and basketball this year and she has a 3.9 grade-point average.
She's a third-year member of the choir, a second-year member of the National Honor Society and a first-year member of the yearbook.
"I like to stay busy because I'm bored if I'm not doing something," said Bernthisel, who ranks 11th in her class of 119. "I like to keep moving. I don't like to be bored."
Athletics are Bernthisel's favorite. She's already a first-team All-Suburban Lakes League selection in both of her sports. Otsego is the defending league champion in volleyball and advanced to the district final last season.
"I love the competition, meeting new people and being a part of a team and you also get to make a lot of friends," said Bernthisel, who also plays for the Toledo Volleyball Club once the high school season.
But Bernthisel enjoys her other school activities.
"Those are a fun way to relax, but still be doing something," she said. "Those aren't about winning and losing. But no matter what activity I'm doing, I still want to do well because there's no sense in being involved in something if you're not going to do your best."
And she likes having a wide group of friends, thanks to her varied activities.
"The same people aren't in the same activities, so you make a lot of friends and I really enjoy that," she said.
Bernthisel is a finalist for senior Homecoming attendant and is a student aide in the main office.
"She's just a good kid. She's never disrespectful and she's well-liked by everyone, both kids and staff," said Cheryl Jones, who is Otsego's volleyball coach and NHS advisor. "She keeps a busy schedule and that's hard when you're in a lot of things. But it's important at a small school. She's willing to get involved."
She's also been involved in athletics administration at Otsego, helping her dad, Otsego athletics director Scott Bernthisel.
Baley already has sold tickets at football games, helped set up the field for football and soccer games, written checks for officials, helped with officials contracts. She's also assisted with the take down and cleanup after events.
"She has a pretty good understanding of how to run the athletics department and she could probably do it if she had to," said Scott Bernthisel, who has been Otsego's high school AD since the fall of 1998 He was the junior high AD for the two previous years.
She first started her dad around age 4 or 5.
"I'm always there doing whatever needs to be done, anything to help him get done faster and just tying up loose ends that he hasn't gotten done," she said.
Although she already has experience in athletics administration, she's planning on majoring in optometry in college, and hopes to play one or both of her sports. She's in the process of deciding on a school.
For now, though, she'll continue to concentrate on being successful at Otsego. And time management is the key to her success.
"I just keep track of what I have to do and get accomplished and budget my time in order to get everything done," she said.
