TOLEDO - Age has its benefits. With Tuesday free admission and special events, Senior Discovery Days let area residents explore the Toledo Zoo in a whole new way.
The featured days will be each Tuesday in September and October (Sept. 3, 10, 17 and 24, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29). Programming will include guided tours of Works Progress Administration (WPA)-era buildings, bingo, big band music and more.
In addition to these Tuesday events, each weekday offers free parking in the Anthony Wayne Trail lot, free fresh-brewed coffee and a mini-muffin in the zoo's North Star Trading Post from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..
The zoo also has two special events planned for early next month:
• Sept. 8 is Grandparents Day. The zoo will give free admission to grandparents - as long as they are accompanied by at least one grandchild. Fun activities in Nature's Neighborhood, the children's zoo, will round out the celebration, and these activities are free with regular zoo admission.
• Sept. 10 is the annual Senior Safari. The Toledo Zoo and the Area Office of Aging Northwestern Ohio present this day of activities focused on seniors, including health screenings, exercise, safety tips and all the exploration the zoo has to offer.
Lunch will be provided in the Nairobi Pavilion; tickets may be purchased in advance by calling the Area Office on Aging at (419) 382-0624.
Tours of WPA-era buildings, including the Museum of Science, Aviary and Reptile House, begin at 11 a.m. and last 30 to 60 minutes. For a schedule of all the Senior Safari activities, visit the zoo's website at toledozoo.org/seniors.
In September and October, the zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends in September. It is located on the Anthony Wayne Trail (U.S. 25), four miles south of downtown Toledo.
