Otterbein-Portage Valley named among ‘Best Nursing Homes’

PEMBERVILLE – The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently named a select
group of long-term and post-acute care providers as being among the country’s "Best Nursing
Homes." Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Community in Pemberville was among facilities named to the list.

The 2014 rankings were published in the U.S. News & World Report. U.S. News determines its annual
rankings through data collected from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The federal
agency assigns each nursing center certified by the government a rating of one to five stars. U.S. News
names all those with a five-star rating a "Best Nursing Home." For more information on how the
rankings are determined, visit: http://health.usnews.com/best-nursing-homes.
In the evaluation process, CMS creates a separate rating for each of three major aspects – rigorous
health inspections, the staffing ratio and number of hours of care for each patient/resident, and nine
unique physical and clinical quality measures. The three ratings are combined and a star rating – from 1
to 5 stars – is assigned to each nursing home; and only those facilities with five overall stars are
given the top rank.
In the state of Ohio, a total of 951 skilled nursing facilities were ranked. In total, 21 percent of
nursing homes in Ohio received a five-star rating.
Tom Keith, regional executive director of Otterbein’s Portage Valley Senior Lifestyle Community said OPV
employees "are thrilled with the results" and Otterbein will continue to strive for
improvement as staff focuses on person-centered care."
