Is God relevant in a technological society?

There is no doubt that technology has greatly impacted every aspect of our lives, including socialization
and interpersonal communication, but how has it influenced the way people think about their relevance to
God and their spirituality?
Mary Alice Rose, a former engineer and scientist, has some answers and will share them during an upcoming
talk entitled "Has Technology Made God and Spirituality Obsolete?" It is free and open to the
public and will be given at 7 p.m., Thursday at the Holiday Inn French Quarter, Room Track 1, in
Perrysburg.
Rose’s interest in science and technology led to a 20-year career in different areas of applied physical
science. Her work ranged from being a meteorologist for the National Severe Storms Laboratory to a
manager developing the ground system for the Hubble Space Telescope.
She notes how both her work with engineering and the sciences is just as important to her as her
spirituality and relationship with God.
"Prayer and my relationship with God play such an important role in my happiness and well-being that
I couldn’t imagine a scenario in which I would find no need for them," she said.
"In this lecture I relate how my own relationship with God has served as a foundation for addressing
this question regarding technology from a number of angles," says Rose. "I will share several
examples illustrating the relevance of God and spirituality in a technological society, including
examples from my experience working on the Hubble Space Telescope project."
Rose’s ideas are based on the teachings of Jesus as recorded in the Bible, and as discussed in Science
and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy.
As interesting as her career was, Rose found she wanted more time to focus on her most rewarding
scientific endeavor: exploring her relationship with God. So, in 2002, she made the transition from
manager, engineer and earth scientist to the full-time ministry as a Christian Science practitioner.
Rose, who lives in Brookeville, MD, is now an authorized teacher of this Science and is a member of the
Christian Science Board of Lectureship.
