‘Helping Hands’ needs additional helping hands

TOLEDO – Many local churches assist the Helping Hands of St. Louis in East Toledo with their
regular soup kitchen meals throughout the year.The group is now in need of donations for its annual
Thanksgiving meal and Christmas food baskets.This holiday season, Helping Hands expects to feed more than
500 people at the Thanksgiving luncheon and give away more than 200 Christmas food baskets. Extra donations
will be given in advance to St. Francis de Sales and Assumption Outreach Centers for their holiday food
distributions.Donations needed for the Thanksgiving meal by Nov. 18 include: frozen turkeys, canned sweet
potatoes, dressing mixes, canned green beans, cream of mushroom soup and fried onions. Donations needed for
the Christmas food baskets by Dec. 13 include: boneless hams, cartons of a dozen eggs, margarine, five-pound
bags of potatoes, apples, oranges and cake mix."A lot of people do not have the means to buy a turkey
or a chicken. You’re helping so many people and they are very thankful," says Paul Cook, director of
Helping Hands.Donations may be sent to or dropped off from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Helping Hands, 443 Sixth St.,
