TOLEDO — Deacon Jeffrey J. Walker, of Custar, will be one of four men ordained to the priesthood of the Diocese of Toledo on June 22 at 11 a.m.
Bishop Leonard P. Blair will ordain the men at Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo.
Walker is 27 and his home parish is Custar St. Louis. He is a graduate of Bowling Green High School and attended Bowling Green State University for one year before becoming a seminarian. He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from St. Joseph College Seminary in Chicago, a graduate degree in sacred theology from Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
The future priest is currently working on his licentiate in sacramental theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm in Rome. In the fall of 2013, he will return to Rome for one more year of study.
Walker’s pastoral internship year was at Perrysburg St. Rose and his summer assignments were at Rossford All Saints and St. Rose.
About the priesthood, Walker says “A person finds true, complete happiness in the vocation to which God calls him. The key is to be open to what God is calling you to do! I know that the priesthood is a wonderful vocation that, in a very unique way, carries on the work of Christ in the everyday lives of His faithful.”
He will celebrate his first Mass of Thanksgiving at 10 a.m. June 23, at St. Louis, Custar. He will also celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at noon on June 30 at St. Rose, Perrysburg.
St. Rose will also host a “Holy Hour of Prayer” for Walker and his classmates next Friday at 7 p.m.
The others being ordained with Walker are Deacon Nathan F. Bockrath, 26, from Glandorf; Deacon Christopher M. Mileski, 28, from Tiffin; and Deacon Jeremy P. Miller, 28, whose home parish is Marblehead St. Joseph.
Miller’s summer assignments also included St. Rose and Findlay St. Michael parishes.
He is a graduate of St. Mary Central Catholic High School in Sandusky, has a Bachelor’s in Philosophy from Xavier University in Cincinnati and a Master’s of Divinity from Mount Saint Mary Seminary of the West in Cincinnati.
Miller quotes Pope John Paul II “The world looks to the priest, because it looks to Jesus! No one can see Christ; but everyone sees the priest, and through him they wish to catch a glimpse of the Lord.”
Miller adds, “If I am privileged to be called to this noble vocation, may I respond generously and faithfully.”
The public is invited to attend the ordination.
