New ‘agape meal’ service at St. John’s Episcopal Church
Father Christopher "Zeke" Coughlin of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bowling Green, has joined
with several students as they attempt to recreate the "agape meals" of the first century.
The service is held at 4 p.m. each Sunday at the church located on East Wooster Street.
According to Coughlin, "The early Christians would share their prayers over a meal, so we gather
over several pizzas and try to do the same."
The church’s pastor said weekly services range from as few as two to as many as 10 people, and anyone
willing to be involved in this kind of experimental and informal worship service is welcome.
"We begin with a prayer and song, then share a meal while scripture is read and we discuss its
meanings, and we close with a small Holy Eucharist using bread from the meal," Coughlin explained.
"It is exceedingly informal and discussions usually last long after the service has ended."
