Area churches as well as businesses and civic groups to assist families at Christmas.
Perrysburg Christians United team with the Perrysburg Township Fire Department to provide Christmas toys and food for needy families in the area. Collection in this "Operation Bread Basket 2012" event continues through Saturday. Various churches combine efforts collecting toys and used children's clothing along with the food which is a year-round PCU project.
The churches of the North Baltimore Area Cooperative Ministry annually pool their efforts for what is termed "Churches Cooperating at Christmas." The St. Vincent de Paul Society and North Baltimore Salvation Army also partner in the annual drive abbreviated CCC2012.
Dayspring Church in Bowling Green and Grace Lutheran in Weston are among the churches which annually collect shoe box gifts for the Operation Christmas Child project.
Among those churches who reach out annually to serve include St. Thomas More Parish in Bowling Green who this year assisted with brightening the holiday for 20 families.
Blessed John XXII Parish in Perrysburg sponsored 58 families and 269 individuals with its "Giving Tree" program.
In both programs parishioners remove a tag from the tree and purchase a gift for the person designated on the "ornament." The wrapped presents are returned to the church and assembled for the families and individuals being served. Volunteers from Blessed John XXIII delivered their presents last Saturday, with the St. Thomas More helpers set to deliver this Saturday.
Many, if not most, other churches in the area have similar or other ways of assisting those in need year-round, but especially at the holidays.
Often, the general public does not hear about these projects in detail as the churches are not seeking publicity, but only to fulfill their Christian beliefs in service to others.
