WESTON - Even the greatest church facilities, sometimes need some attention. Such was the case with the Weston United Methodist Church. The roof of the church was showing its age, with frequent damage from the elements, leaks were a regular occurrence for the congregation. "There were just so many repairs which needed to be done, we finally decided we had to start from scratch," said Beverly Murphy, a member of the congregation. "It is just like a wind tunnel and the singles would regularly blow off," she added. Her husband, Norman Murphy added, that apparently the church's insurance company was getting tired of the mounting claims and offered to cover the cost of the new roof. William Meyers, out of Napoleon, was contracted to do the work, which was recently completed.
Norman Murphy stressed it was a really big project because of the big steeple and sizeable roof that it required "73 square of shingles." He said the new shingles are top quality from Owens-Corning and feature a 50-year warranty on the shingles, with 10 years on the labor.

With the church located so near a popular gas station and carry-out in the village, the work has gotten plenty of notice. "It's a miracle we could do this debt free," Beverly stated. "At the suggestion when they said, 'We'll replace your roof," it was beyond our dream." Again noting the steeple as well as the bell tower and 100-foot beam, Norman added, "This is a big church, but a small congregation. It is quite a project for us." The church was established in 1895, and the congregation was able to fund a stained-glass window restoration shortly after its centennial celebration in 1995. Dr. James Stewart is currently serving as the pastor. Those attending this weekend's activities for Weston Days can view the new topper for the church.
