Bowling Green State University Police Lt. John Stewart introduces canine Jerry to BGSU President Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey before the start of a press conference Wednesday afternoon. In an effort to enhance the safety of BGSU and the surrounding area, Ohio Homeland Security (OHS) through a pilot program is providing the university with an explosive-detection canine. An OHS grant covers the purchase and training for the canine, and provides funding for veterinarian bills and other equipment. After 10 weeks of training, Jerry, a male Belgian Malinois, will patrol BGSU alongside his handler, Stewart. Stewart spent the past five weeks training with Jerry in Columbus. Existing federal grants through OHS cover the expense of the purchase, training, veterinarian bills and other equipment necessary for the program. The cost for each canine is $12,767. (Photos: J.D.
