P.W. (from left), Leona Thomas, and Mike O'Donnell retire the colors after a flag retirement ceremony at the Bradner Legion Friday night, in which torn and damaged American flags are honorably disposed. The ceremony was presented by American Legion Post 338 on Friday, which was Flag Day. The annual event has been held every Flag Day for at least 30 years. The legion is one of the few organizations that do the flag retirements on a regular basis. (Photos: Shane Hughes/Sentinel-Tribune) SEE MORE

Thomas Stahl sets an American flag ablaze during a flag retirement ceremony in Bradner. During a proper flag retirement, the flag is suspended on a metal bar to prevent it from being dirtied by the barrel.
