Welch qualifies for national championship (04-30-14)

Justin Welch, from Eastwood High School, is a junior thrower on the University of Findlay track and field
team.
He has qualified for the Division II national championships in the hammer throw.
At the Penn Relays, Welch won the hammer throw by 20 feet effort traveled 231-6. It was also the 10th
best throw in the history of the Penn Relays.
Earlier this month he was the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference field athlete of the week
after he was third in the hammer throw with a 233-7 effort, which is the longest throw in NCAA Division
II history, at the Jesse Owens Track Classic. It’s was also a school record and the fourth longest throw
in the national across all NCAA divisions.
At the All-Ohio championships, he won the hammer with a throw of 230-11.
At the Bellarmine Invitational, he won the hammer throw (218-6) and was second in the discus (173-6).
Collin Parrill, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior on the University of Findlay baseball team.
He has pitched seven innings in five appearances and is 0-1 with a 2.57 earned run average.
Dustin Peper, from Otsego High School, is a redshirt freshman infielder on the Bowling Green State
University baseball team.
He has appeared in six games and has one hit in seven at-bats.
Travis Podolak, from Otsego High School, is a junior on the Siena Heights University baseball team.
He has played in 16 games and is hitting .250 with a double and two RBI.
Joe Pritts, from Elmwood High School, is a freshman on the gymnastics team at the U.S. Military Academy.

Pritts recently competed in the floor exercise (14.2) and the vault (13.35) at the NCAA gymnastics
championships.
Katie Reiser, from Elmwood High School, is a senior sprinter on Kent State University women’s track and
field team.
At the Kip Janrvin Open, Reiser was second in the 100 (12.40).
At the Jesse Owens Track Classic, Reiser ran a leg on the KSU 400 relay team which finished sixth.
Kori Reiser, from Elmwood High School, is a sophomore thrower on the Bowling Green State University
women’s track team.
She was second in the hammer throw (181-9) and discus (159-9) at the Hillsdale College Gina Relays.
Reiser’s effort in the discus tied for sixth-best in school history and she also reached the
Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying mark in the event.
Emily Reynolds, from Elmwood High School, is a senior on the University of Findlay softball team.
She has played in 36 of Findlay’s 39 games and is hitting .267 with five doubles and three home runs.
Reynolds is tied for the team lead with 27 RBI.
Lindsey Rich, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior pitcher/first baseman on the Eastern Michigan
University softball team.
She has pitched in 33 games, making 14 starts this season and is 5-13 with two saves and a 4.93
earned-run average. She has 81 strikeouts and 54 walks while pitching a team-high 130 2/3 innings.
At the plate, Rich is hitting .209 with a team-high four home runs.
In a 3-0 win over Bowling Green, Rich picked up the win and hit a two-run home run. Rich pitched the
first six innings, allowing five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Austin Rodesky, from Bowling Green High School, is a freshman pitcher on the Urbana University baseball
team.
He has appeared in eight games, making four starts and is 3-1 with 3.67 earned run average. In 27 innings
he has struck out nine and walked 19.
Reid Rothenbuhler, from Elmwood High School, is a senior on the University of Findlay baseball team.
He has played in 37 games for the Oilers and is leading the team with a .279 batting average. He has 22
RBI with a team-high eight doubles, and two home runs.
In a 12-4 loss to Grand Valley State, Rothenbuhler was 4-for-5 with a double, home run and four RBI.
Clayton Ruch, from Eastwood High School, is a senior pitcher on the Wayne State baseball team.
He has appeared in 20 games and is 3-2 with 12 saves and a 3.16 earned run average. He has pitched 25 2/3
innings with 13 strikesouts and seven walks.
Ruch now holds both the program’s career save record (22) and single-season record, which was 11 held by
Billy Hurley (2010-12).
Megan Russ, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore lacrosse player at Trine University.
Nathan Scanlan, from Lake High School, is a sophomore on the Lourdes University baseball team.
Kyle Schlumbohm, from Eastwood High School, is a redshirt freshman pole vaulter at Kent State University.

He was an a honorable mention All-Mid American Conference academic selection for the indoor track and
field season.
Jeffrey Schorsch, from Perrysburg High School, was a freshman on the tennis team at Valparaiso
University.
He was the Horizon League freshman of the year in addition to being named a first-team all-league
selection. Schorsch set the school record for singles victories in a season with 27, shattering the
previous mark of 20. He was 27-10 in singles play
Schorsch and Charlie Emhardt won 20 straight doubles matches and the duo finished the season 21-1.
Alec Schmenk, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior pitcher on the University of Toledo baseball team.

He has appeared in four games and is 0-0 with a 7.36 earned-run average.
Cody Seifert, from Eastwood High School, is a redshirt junior on the Kent State University men’s track
and field team.
At the Ashland Alumni Open, Seifert was eighth in the 100 (11.14) and second in the 200 (21.83).
Erin Seiler, a Bowling Green resident, is a sophomore on the University of Akron softball team.
She has pitched in 27 games, making 24 starts, and is 17-7 with one save and a 1.71 earned-run average.
In 163 1/3 innings, Seiler has struck out 140 and walked 67.
Seiler has been honored as the Mid-American Conference East pitcher of the week four times this season
and six times in her career.
Last weekend, she recorded a pair of complete game shutouts against Ohio, a team that entered the weekend
in first place overall in the MAC. She had 0.90 ERA in a combined 23.1 innings of work, striking out 11.

She has now 25 consecutive scoreless innings against MAC opponents.
Alyssa Shimel, from Eastwood High School, is a senior on the University of Michigan women’s golf team.

At the Big Ten championships. Shimel finished 54th with a 239 total.
She played in a total of 40 events during her UM career.
This season she had a 78.50 average.
Joe Sickler, from Bowling Green High School, is a senior infielder on the baseball team at the University
of Findlay.
Sicker has played in all 38 games for Findlay and is hitting .259 with a team-high 23 RBI and three home
runs. Sicker also has seven doubles and a triple.
Hunter Smith, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the Michigan State baseball team.
He has appeared in seven games and has one hit and one RBI in 12 at-bats.
Kyle Smithey, from Elmwood High School, is a sophomore on the University of Findlay men’s track and field
team.
He was a member of the distance medley relay team which was 24th at the Penn Relays.
At the Bellarmine Invitational, Smithey ran a leg on the 1,600 relay team which was ninth.
Ryan Smoyer, from Otsego High School, is a freshman on the University of Notre Dame baseball team.
He is 0-0 in eight games with a 7.36 earned-run average.
Emily Stewart, from North Baltimore High School, is a junior on the University of Findlay softball team.

Stewart has played in 34 of Findlay’s 39 games and is hitting .222 with two doubles, a home run and 11
RBI.
Lorne Strausbaugh, from Elmwood High School, is a freshman on the Malone University cross country team.

Corey Tipton, from Grand Rapids, is a freshman on the University of Toledo’s baseball team. He attended
Toledo St. John’s.
Becca Tudor, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the McNeese State University women’s golf
team.
She played two rounds this spring and has an 84.0 average.
Kendall Tudor, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior on the McNeese State University women’s golf
team.
She played eight rounds this spring in three tournaments and has an average of 84.0.
Adam Tyson, from Elmwood High School, is a senior pitcher on the University of Toledo baseball team.
He has pitched in 17 games and is 2-2 with a 5.95 earned run average. In 19 2/3 innings, he has struck
out 19 and walked nine.
April Weaver, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the women’s tennis team at Washington
College.
She is 15-5 overall in singles and 13-5 overall in doubles.
Weaver is ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region. Weaver and with her doubles partner Marielle McIntyre
are ranked 13th in region.
Hillary West, from Lake High School, is a redshirt sophomore on the Lourdes College softball team.
She has made 37 starts this spring and is hitting .265 with nine doubles, one home run, and 11 RBI.
Aimee Whitmer, from Otsego High School, was a senior on the Bluffton University women’s soccer team this
season.
She won the Kathryn E. Little Award as outstanding senior female athlete. The award is based on
scholarship, academic abilities and campus leadership, as well as four years of participation in at
least one sport.
Whitmer started all 67 games of her college soccer career. She was named first-team all-conference and
second-team all-Ohio by the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association. The latter honor was the highest ever
achieved by a Bluffton women’s soccer player.
Despite playing most of her career as a defender, Whitmer scored 13 goals-including three
game-winners-and added six assists. She is the only defender in the top 10 on Bluffton’s career goals
list, ranking 10th, and is eighth in career assists
"Exciting to watch develop as a player, Aimee blossomed in the classroom as well," said her
coach, Rick Nussbaum. "Her perseverance and dedication to improvement have been a steady source of
inspiration, and it has truly been a pleasure to coach and mentor her."
She is majoring in psychology and social work.
Alex Williams, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior pitcher on the University of Findlay baseball
team.
He has appeared in 18 games, pitching 41 innings, and is 3-3 with a team-high three saves. Williams has a
1.98 earned run average and has struck out a team-high 43.
Eric Wymer, a resident of North Baltimore, is a sophomore on the Ohio Northern men’s track and field
team.
In the Ohio Athletic Conference championship meet, Wymer was seventh in the 1,500 (4:03.29).
At the Kenyon Spring Invitational, he was 15th in the 800 (2:03.13) and third in the 1,500 (4:04.67).
Emily Wyrick, from Perrysburg High School, is a freshman on the University of Toledo women’s cross
country team.
She was seventh in the 800 (2:16.87) at the Cherry Blossom Invitational and fifth in the 800 (2:18.11) at
the Gina Relays.
