BGSU’s Pleger advances to NCAA championshipGREENSBORO, N.C. — Bowling Green State University’s
Brooke Pleger won the NCAA East Region preliminary Friday in the hammer throw.Her toss of 210-1 edged out
Akron’s Brittany Funk for the win.The top 12 finishers in the field of 48 advanced to the national
championships.Pleger, seeded second, was in the last of three flights and quickly pushed herself into
contention with a throw of 199-4 on her first throw.After fouling on each of her next two throws, Pleger
headed into the finals in fifth place out of 16.Her first of three throws in the finals went 204-6 to move
her into third and then her second throw was the winner, going 210-1. Funk finished second with a throw of
208-6.Pleger becomes the first BGSU athlete to qualify for the outdoor national championships since Kerri
McClung in 2005.The NCAA championships are June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.The top 12 finishers from the East will
combine with the top 12 finishers from the West for a 24-person field in the hammer throw.Falcon baseball
downs ToledoAVON — The Bowling Green State University baseball team beat Toledo, 4-3, to advance in the
Mid-American Conference tournament Friday.The Falcon, 22-28, play Toledo today at 12:30 p.m.BG’s Mike Frank
pitched a complete-game, allowing six hits and no walks with five strikeouts.BG scored the eventual
game-winner in the bottom of the eighth inning on Matt Pitzulo’s two-out ground ball and that was mishandled
in the infield.Jeremy Shay and Jesse Rait each had two hits for the Falcons and Jake Thomas drove in two
runs.UT’s Ben Hammer, from Elmwood High School, hit a two-RBI single in the sixth inning.Owens’ Hoelzer
earns All-America honorsSCOTTSBORO, Ala. — Brandon Hoelzer from Owens Community College finished in a tie
for 25th at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division national tournament, and was named an
honorable mention All-America. He finished at 296, 6-over-par.As a team, Owens was 10th with a 45-over-par
1,197 total.Other scores for Owens were: Luke Berger, tied for 35th, 299; Darren Gessner and Blaze Hogan,
tied for 57th, 304; and Walter Dorosh, tied for 77th, 310.South Mountain (Ariz.) CC won its second straight
national title with a 1,139 total and David Keenan of Parkland (Ill.) College was the individual winner with
