BG swimming falls
OXFORD — The Bowling Green State University swimming team won four events, but defending Mid-American Conference champion Miami was too strong for the Falcons Friday in a 179-111 victory.
Freshman Victoria Griffin won the 100 and 200 freestyles, posting a time of 51.38 seconds in the 100 and 1:51.08 in the 200.
BG also won the 400 medley relay as Maya Skorupski, Daniela Carrillo, Joelle Scheps and Brittany Szekely finished in 3:54.10.
Scheps won the 100 butterfly in 57.06.
Falcons’ Silva honored
Bowling Green men’s soccer player Brandon Silva was named to the Capital One academic all-district team.
Silva’s name will be placed ballot for national All-American honors.
Silva is in his first semester in graduate school at BG as a kinesiology major. He earned his undergraduate degree in May with a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average.
BG’s Snelling honored
Bowling Green cross country and track and field coach Lou Snelling was named to the all-time Southland Conference cross country honor roll.
At Stephen F. Austin, Snelling earned six Southland coach of the year awards (men’s in 2003, 2004, and 2005 and women’s in 2003, 2009 and 2010). He also led the school to conference crowns in men’s cross country in 2003, 2004, and 2005, and women’s in 2003 and 2010.
Falcon tennis competes
CINCINNATI — Bowling Green’s tennis team competed in the non-scoring Cincinnati Invitational Friday.
BG’s Hannah Drayton was 2-0, and Harley Hutchison, Nikki Chiricosta and Katie Brozovich each won two of their three overall matches.
Express women’s volleyball rolls
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— The Owens Community College volleyball team opened Region XII District E tournament play with a 25-22, 25-14, 25-21 win over Schoolcraft College.
The Express leaders were: Ciarra Wirick, 19 assists, 10 digs, six kills; Lisa Urbanski, 16 digs; Jessica Copper, 14 digs; and Sara Turner-Smith, 11 kills.
Express men’s basketball wins
The Owens Community College men’s basketball team defeated Washtenaw Community College 128-66 in its opener.
Kenny Jones led the Express, ranked eighth nationally, with 18 points.
Other leaders for Owens were: John Murry, 17 points, seven rebounds, two assists; Bikramjit Gill, 15 points, seven rebounds, two steals; and Martez Asberry, 14 points, four rebounds, three steals.
Express women’s basketball loses
WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa —The Owens Community College women’s basketball team, ranked ninth nationally, lost its opener 65-63 to Kirkwood College.
The Express were led by: Kamilah Carter, 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists, one steal; Eboni Adams, 14 points; Zhana Randolph, nine points; and Ashley Tunstall, nine rebounds, three points.
