Sexton to play in Finland
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Former Bowling Green Falcon forward Dan Sexton has signed to play professional hockey in Finland.
The 26-year-old will play for TPS after skating for the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch last season. The Crunch are an affiliate for the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning.
Sexton was a restricted free agent, but the Lightning retained Sexton's North American rights by making him a qualifying offer. He'll become an unrestricted free agent when he turns 27.
Sexton totaled nine goals and 19 assists in 43 AHL games last season. He started the season with Norfolk before being traded to Tampa Bay in March. Norfolk is an affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks.
Sexton had 24 goals and 36 assists in 76 games at BG during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. He signed with the Ducks after his sophomore season.
Whitmore joins Hershey
HERSHEY, Pa. - Former Bowling Green Falcon forward Derek Whitmore has signed with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears.
Whitmore spent most of last season playing in Germany after starting the season in the AHL. He played for the Augsburg Panthers in Germany, totaling nine goals and 14 assists in 26 games.
Whitmore had 70 goals and 32 assists in 143 games at BG from 2004-08.
Hershey is an affiliate of the NHL's Washington Capitals.
Matsumoto signs with Panthers
SUNRISE, Fla. - Former Bowling Green Falcon forward Jon Matsumoto signed a one-year contract Monday with the NHL's Florida Panthers.
Matsumoto, 26, has played in 14 NHL games with Carolina (2011-12) and Florida (2012), recording two assists. He played in 60 games with the American Hockey League's Worcester Sharks, totaling 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) and a goal in five games with the AHL's Chicago Wolves last season.
Matsumoto has 139 goals and 175 points in seven professional seasons.
He played three seasons at BG, totaling 49 goals and 74 assists in 110 games from 2004-07.
Otsego hosts 5K run
TONTOGANY - Otsego High School is hosting a 5K run Aug. 10 at 8 a.m. as part of the Tontogany Festival.
