WCHA announces sites for playoff finals
ST. PAUL Minn. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff championships will be held on a rotating basis in Grand Rapids. Mich., and St. Paul. Minn., the league announced Saturday.
Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids will host the 2014 and 2016 championships and the Xcel Energy Center will host the event in 2015 and 2017.
The championships are March 21-22 in 2014 and March 20-21 in 2015.
Both are Friday-Saturday events.
The semifinals will be held the first day, followed by the championship game on the second day.
There will be no consolation game.
The top eight teams in the 10-team league will qualify for the first round of the playoffs.
The first-round will be best-of-3 series at campus sites, with the four winners advancing to the WCHA Championships.
Bowling Green will be a member of the WCHA next season.
BG's Nocella Ali capture MAC titles
KALAMAZOO, Mich., - Bowling Green's Alyssa Nocella won the balance team and Jamilah Ali tied for first in the vault, and the Kerrie Beach was named the coach of the year Saturday during the Mid-American Conference gymnastics meet Saturday.
Nocella had score of 9.85, and Ali scored 9.875 on the way to their wins.
The Falcons finished fifth as a team with a 193.750.
Beach's teams have been among the most improved in the MAC, with regional qualifying scores rising from 190.865 in 2011 to 193.630 in 2012.
This year, the team's RQS improved to 194.035, as the Falcons notched three scores above 194.500, including a season-high 195.175 on March 16.
BG baseball loses twice
Western Michigan's baseball team completed a sweep of its Mid-American Conference series with Bowling Green Saturday, posting a 4-3, 4-3 doubleheader victory at Steller Field.
Ben Bien, Patrick Lancaster, T.J. Losby, Andrew Kubuski and Jesse Rait each had two hits for BG in the first game.
Bien had two hits in the second game.
BG is 4-15 overall and 0-3 in the MAC. Western is 7-15, 3-0.
BG tennis win streak stopped
PERRYSBURG - Bowling Green's women's tennis team saw its school-record 12-match winning streak ended Saturday with a 4-3 loss to Eastern Michigan at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
Both teams are 1-1 in the Mid-American Conference. BG is 12-2 overall, while Eastern is 6-10.
Carrillo finishes 37th in NCAAs
INDIANAPOLIS - Bowling Green swimmer Daniela Carrillo placed 37th in preliminaries of the 200-yard breaststroke Saturday during the NCAA championships
Her time was 2:12.89, her second-best of the season. Her best was 2:11.20 during the Mid-American Conference meet.
