Elmwood's Lee honored
COLUMBUS - Elmwood's Dave Lee has been recognized by the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association as the OHSAA Ethics and Integrity Award Winner this season.
Lee will be introduced tonight at the state wrestling tournament.
In 25 years at Elmwood, Lee has compiled a 450-191 dual meet record with 12 league titles and three top 10 finishes in the state championships.
Lee has coached 62 state qualifiers, 27 state placers, four state runners-up and three state champions.
Lee's philosophy for his wrestlers has always been 'be a hammer on the mat and a gentleman off the mat' and he wants all his wrestlers to be 'assets to society.'
Falcon swimmers fifth
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Bowling Green State University swim team got off to a fast start on the first day at the Mid-American Conference Championships, shattering school records en route to 135 points. The Falcons are fifth in the eight-team field.
The Falcons saw record-setting performances in the 400 medley relay, the 500 freestyle and the 200 individual, as BG qualified four athletes to the championship finals and notched a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay.
In the final race of the evening, the team of Alexa Harris, Alexis Kain, Jordan Bullock and Brittany Szekely swam the relay in a time of 3:41.00, beating the s school record of 3:42.98 set at last year's MAC championships. The Falcons finished second.
Emily Waller, Harris and Jo√´lle Scheps broke individual BG records, with Waller finishing sixth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:53.98. Harris (2:02.29) and Scheps (2:02.48) each surpassed the school record in the 200 individual medley, qualifying to the championship final where they finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Bennet was seventh in the final of the 50 freestyle in 23.24.
Also for BG, the 200 freestyle relay team of Bennet, Szekely, Kayla Effinger and Kain swam a season-best 1:32.29 to finish fourth.
BGSU hires women's asst. soccer coach
Rhonda Gottschalk hs been hired as an assistant women's soccer coach at Bowling Green State University.
Gottschalk has been an assistant at Youngstown State, Duquesne and Ashland. Gottschalk comes to BGSU after spending the 2012 season as an assistant coach at Youngstown State University, where she primarily worked with the goalkeepers.
Gottschalk earned her bachelor's degree in education, physical education and health from Concord (W.Va.) in 2006. She also earned a master's degree in applied exercise science from Ashland in 2009.
BG fast-pitch signup set
The Bowling Green Fast-Pitch Association summer league signup is Monday from 6-7 p.m. at the Henschen Building at Carter Park.
Girls of all ages can participate.
Weston adds signup date
WESTON - Weston has added an additional signup date for youth baseball.
The date is Wednesday at the Village Hall from 6-8 p.m. The cost is $25 per child and $15 for each additional child in the same family.
