BG’s Pleger No. 2 in nation
AKRON — Bowling Green State University’s Brooke Pleger broke her own school record in the hammer throw and climbed to No. 2 in the country in the event, throwing 219-feet-9 at the Northeast Ohio Invitational Friday, hosted by Akron.
Pleger set Bowling Green’s school record a week ago with a toss of 212-6 at the Raleigh Relays, the third-best throw in the country this year. She took it a step further Friday and surpassed UCLA’s Ida Storm, who had a throw of 217-1 earlier this year, for second in the nation. Only Arizona State’s Chelsea Cassulo has thrown further this year with a toss of 229-0.
The throw also met the USA Track and Field A Standard, meaning that Pleger has automatically qualified for the USA Track and Field Championships June 19-23 in Des Moines, Iowa.
BGSU tennis downs Akron
AKRON — The Bowling Green State University tennis team defeated Mid-American Conference favorite Akron, 4-3, on the road Friday. The Falcons are now 14-2 and 3-1 in the MAC.
BGSU baseball routs EMU
The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored a season-high 10 runs in a win over Eastern Michigan on Friday at Warren E. Steller Field. The Falcons are now 7-17 and 3-4 in the Mid-American Conference.
BG tallied 13 hits and were led by Jake Thomas who had two singles, two doubles and three RBI.
Cody Apthorpe allowed only one hit and two walks in seven innings of work.
Owens softball wins twice
Melanie Iacoangeli had five stolen bases, while also going 4-for-6 with two runs, two RBI and a walk as the No. 15 Owens Community College softball team swept a pair of games against Sinclair CC at home Friday.
Six different hitters had two hits apiece as the Express rolled to a 12-1 victory in the first game. In Game 2, the Express prevailed 7-1.
The Express are 15-9.
Owens baseball splits
The Owens Express baseball team split a pair of Ohio Community College Athletic Conference games against Cuyahoga Community College at home on Friday. The Express won 2-0 in Game 1, but dropped Game 2, 9-6.
In the opener, Owens scored twice in the first inning as Austin Cowan hit an RBI double.
In the second game, Benjamin Breymier had two hits for Owens while Logan Shullick had three RBI and Cowen drove in two runs.
