SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Bowling Green High School graduate Caroline Powers shot a 1-over-par 73 Thursday during the first round of the U.S. Women’s Open.
Powers had an even-par 35 on the front nine and a 1-over-38 on the back nine at Sebonack Golf Club.
When Powers’ round finished, she was tied for 39th place in the 156-player field. The leaders were Inbee Park and I.K. Kim at 5-under, but Kim still had four holes remaining.
Powers, in playing just her third tournament as a pro after an outstanding amateur career at Michigan State University, had five birdies and six bogeys.
She birdied the ninth hole to finish the front nine even and then birdied 10 to go 1-under, but was 1-over after bogeys at 11 and 12. She birdied 13 to get back to even, but bogeyed 16 and then had pars on the final three holes.
Powers hit 11-of-14 fairways, 10-of-18 greens in regulation and used 25 putts.
