PEMBERVILLE – Friday night’s Pemberville 5-Miler was the culmination of a difficult road for Joe Cadaret.
Twelve years ago, at the age of 20, the village resident was diagnosed with Wegener’s Granular Mitosis, an autoimmune disorder that causes leakage in blood vessels, wreaking havoc on his lungs, kidneys and joints.
Selective chemotherapy treatments to staunch the chronic disorder caused him to need a hip replacement.
But through it all, and with the support of his wife of six years, Sarah, the pair was among the 497 runners at the annual race, one of the highlights of the Pemberville Free Fair.
There were a number of factors complicating the odds against Cadaret finishing the race. He underwent chemo treatments twice within the past 30 days, was fighting pulled calf muscles in both legs, and had sustained a knee injury.
But through it all, the former boxer, cyclist, and karate practitioner dropped 20 pounds since May in training with his wife for the race, to show “that I can still do it,” he said, that the disease “hasn’t beat me.”

Dorcus Chesang of Toledo celebrates in the final stretch of the Pemberville 5K before becoming the first female to cross the finish line.
Conditions for the race were ideal. With a light breeze and a race-time temperature in the mid 70s, race organizer Keith Madaras characterized the climate as “about the best we’ve ever had it.” Often the temperatures for the race can reach into the 90s.
Finishing first overall in the event was Philip Lagat, 29, a Toledoan and native of Kenya, with a time of 24:45.
The first female finisher, coming in at a time of 28:35, was Dorcus Chesang, also a Toledoan and native Kenyan, and Lagat’s training partner.
Both are professional runners and said they used the race as a training run.
The practice paid off: Chesang’s time set a course record for female runners, and Lagat finished just off of the record time for men.
Fellow Kenyan and defending 2010 and 2011 5-Miler champ, Julius Kiptoo, did not race in the event.
“The race is good,” said Lagat of this, his first time at the 5-Miler. “It’s a good way going and coming back.” However, he noted the ease with which one could get lost along the race’s route.
And Cadaret?
He and Sarah finished side-by-side with a time of 56:52.
“We never had to walk, and he did awesome,” said Sarah.
“This was our first time together running five miles. It was pretty awesome.”
Joe Cadaret is interested in some more ambitious milestones now. Though the pair plains to be back at the 5-Miler next year, he’s setting his sights on a half-marathon.
“Want to stay busy,” he said.
