Owens Community College’s men’s basketball team was an 80-75 loser Friday to Rend Lake College in the semifinals of the NJCAA Division II national tournament in Danville, Ill.
The Express held a 58-52 lead with 8:27 left, but 12th-ranked Rend Lake dominated down the stretch and didn’t miss from the foul line. Rend was 11-of-12 from the line in the final four minutes.
Joe Retic II continued his outstanding play in the tournament for Owens. He had a game-high 25 points, three assists and three steals, while James Kelly added 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
Also for Owens, Javon Rice was 4-for-8 on 3-pointers and totaled 14 points. Owens’ Jay Marquette was strong off the glass as the Rossford resident had a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Express were 27-of-77 from the field, 13-of-40 on 3-pointers and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Rend was 29-of-67 from the line, including 2-of-13 on 3-pointers. It was 20-of-27 from the line.
Owens, 26-9, plays tonight at 6:30 in the consolation game. The Express are going for their second third-place finish in program history, the other coming in 1994.

In East Peoria, Ill., Karahn Scott had 16 points and seven rebounds as ninth-ranked Owens won in the consolation bracket of the NJCAA Division II national tournament.
Uniqua Mitchell had 15 points, and Meshia Smith added 14 points and 10 rebounds, for the Express (27-8), who will play Lake Michigan today at 1 p.m. for seventh place.
Owens trailed 10-0 in the game, but rallied for a 31-27 lead at the half. The Express pulled away during the final 20 minutes.
The Express were 27-of-73 from the field, 4-of-17 on 3-pointers, and 15-of-21 from the free-throw line. St. Louis made 19-of-77 field goals, 4-of-14 3-pointers and 9-of-21 free throws.
Owens’ Nandi Taylor had five assists.
If Owens wins today, the 28 victories would be the second-most in school history and it would give the Express their best finish in the national tournament.
