Brown Mackie College beat Owens Community's men's basketball team, 80-66 Saturday in the third-place game of the NJCAA Division II national tournament in Danville, Ill.
Owens finished 26-10.
The Express had a rough time getting started, due in part to injuries to Andy Bachman and Joe Retic II. Bachman did not play and Retic was limited to two points.
Tony Boykins led Owens with a game-high 18 points, while adding four assists, one rebound and one block and James Kelly scored 13 points and added nine rebounds.
Jay Marquette, a Rossford resident, finished with five points, six rebounds and an assist for Owens.
In the women's national tournament, Owens beat Lake Michigan, 60-43 to finish seventh in East Peoria, Ill.
Owens finished its season 28-8.
Meshia Smith's layup gave the Express a 7-6 lead and they never trailed again. Owens closed the first half on a 23-5 run to basically put the game away.
Smith finished with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Also for Owens, Uniqua Mitchell scored 17 points and had eight rebounds; and Mackenzie Heacock added 14 points and six rebounds; and Karahn Scott had 15 rebounds.
Heacock was named to the all-tournament team.
