Two former Bowling Green residents have uprooted and planted themselves in Morenci, Mich. where they have purchased an 18-hole golf course.
Justen and Kristy Reitzel are the new owners of DeMor Hills Golf Course, located about 35 minutes from Sylvania.
"My husband has always wanted to own a golf course, but we also wanted to stay close to home. This was the closest golf course within our price range," Kristy Reitzel said. And, they both share a love for golf.
"If we didn't buy it, a farmer was going to buy it and turn it into farm land," she said.
The couple purchased the course on March 25 and officially opened on April 1. The course, built in 1962, is a par 72. They market the course as "pure golf in nature."
"What we like about the course is it is hilly, it's got ponds and trees. It's beautiful," she said.
Prior to purchasing the course and moving to Michigan, the couple lived in Bowling Green for five years. Justen Reitzel was assistant superintendent at Bowling Green Country Club. He also worked at Heather Downs Country Club, Toledo, and at Cherrywood Golf Club, Ottawa Lake, Mich. He graduated from Owens Community College's Golf Course/Athletic Field Management program in 2011.
Kristy Reitzel has worked for the last 15 years at Animal Emergency and Critical Care Center, Toledo.
"It was really tough for me to leave a job I worked at for so many years," she said.
"We were sad to leave Bowling Green. We really loved our house, but we are very happy up here."
The couple owns the course, but also plays an integral role in its daily operations.
Justen serves as superintendent and Kristy as club house manager.
That has meant working 14 hour days, seven days a week for the pair.
But they are already beginning to see the dividends from their hard work.
"People are saying the economy is getting better. We are already getting a lot of new members and a lot of people are out playing. This course is in great shape and we are moving in the right direction."
DeMor Hills Golf Course is located at 10275 Ranger Highway, Morenci, Mich. For more information, call (517) 458-6679.
