College Scene: Xavier Brown earns district, league honors (03-27-14)

Xavier Brown, from Bowling Green High School, was a junior on the College of Wooster men’s basketball
team.
He earned first-team All-Great Lakes district honors, and was a first-team All-North Coast Athletic
Conference member for the third straight season.
Brown finished the season as Wooster’s leading scorer at 14.7 points per outing, more than a point better
than last year, due to career bests in field-goal percentage (.450), 3-point percentage (.448), and free
throw percentage (.842).
Also, he recorded a positive assist-to-turnover ratio (65:61) for the first time and served as the team’s
top defensive player on the perimeter, leading the way with 40 steals.
Casey Akenberger, from Bowling Green High School, is a sophomore on the Jacksonville State softball team.
Jacksonville State is 19-8 overall.
This season, she is 4-2 in eight appearances with seven starts. Her earned run average is 6.11 in 26 1/3
innings with 13 strike outs and 12 walks.
Akenberger played in 16 games last season, going 3-6 with a team-best two saves.
Shelby Antonacci, from Lake High School, has transferred to Owens Community College and will be a
sophomore forward on the Express women’s soccer team.
She played last fall at the University of Toledo, making five starts while playing in 17 matches. She
tied for third on the team with two goals.
Morgan Arnold, from Elmwood High School, is a junior on the University of Findlay softball team.
Last season, she was an NFCA Academic All-America and received the Division II Athletics Directors
Association Academic Achievement Award.
Samantha Auchmuty, from Elmwood High School, is a junior thrower on the Heidelberg University women’s
track and field team.
Kylee Bernthisel, from Otsego High School, is a sophomore on the Ashland University women’s track and
field team.
Jordan Breitigam, from Bowling Green High School, was a senior on the Ohio Northern men’s swimming and a
diving team.
Breitigam finished sixth in the 200 butterfly consolation finals and 14th out of 33 swimmers overall in
1:50.37 at the 2014 NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships.
He is now a three-time honorable mention All-American in the event, finishing ninth last year in 1:47.46
and 13th at the 2012 NCAA III championships.
In the 100 butterfly at the nationals, Breitigam was 19th in 49.50, and he was 57th in the 200 individual
medley in 1:55.33.
Reagan Briggs, from Elmwood High School, is a redshirt freshman pole vaulter for the Eastern Michigan
University women’s track and field team.
Kaysie Brittenham, from Lake High School, was a sophomore on the Cedarville University women’s basketball
team.
She played in all 28 games, with 10 starts for Cedarville, 18-10 this season. Brittenham averaged 7.8
points and 3.2 rebounds per game, and was third on the team with 43 3-pointers.
Vitto Brown, from Bowling Green High School, is a freshman on the University of Wisconsin men’s
basketball team.
He has played a total of 42 minutes in 12 of Wisconsin’s first 35 games and has six points and 12
rebounds.
Bailey Burk, from Bowling Green High School, was a sophomore on the Case Western Reserve University
women’s swimming and diving team.
Jacob Burk, from Bowling Green High School, was a freshman on the Baldwin Wallace College men’s swimming
team.
Bryant Byrd, from Perrysburg High School, is a freshman on the Western Colorado University men’s track
team.
Mason Cajka, from Perrysburg High School, was a freshman on the Ohio State-Lima men’s basketball team.

Michael Cavanaugh, from Otsego High School, was a senior on the Miami (Ohio) University men’s swimming
team.
In the Mid-American Conference meet, Cavanaugh was 14th in the 200 individual medley (1:53.20), and 15th
in 200 butterfly (1:51.81).
Ryan Clay, from Rossford High School, is a freshman on the track team at Purdue University.
Katie Cochrane, from Bowling Green High School, is a freshman on the Ohio Northern women’s track and
field team.
Zach Coffield, from Eastwood High School, is a freshman in the Tiffin University baseball team.
Coffield has played in 14 of Tiffin’s first 20 games, making 11 starts. He is hitting .238 with three
doubles and is second on the team with nine RBI.
Aaron Davis, a senior at Perrysburg High School, has signed a national letter of intent to attend the
University of Findlay to play men’s soccer.
Katie Dewyre, from Eastwood High School, is a senior on the Adrian College softball team.
In Adrian’s first nine games, Dewyre is hitting .421 with an on-base percentage of .476.
Lauren Diehl, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the women’s golf team at Bowling Green State
University.
Nolan Dill, from Bowling Green High School, is a freshman walk-on to the Michigan State baseball team.

Katie Dunphy, from Perrysburg High School, is a freshman on the softball team at the University of
Findlay.
She has played in three games and has a solo home run in two at-bats.
Kyle Durham, from Perrysburg High School, is a freshman on the Tiffin University baseball team.
He has played in 14 of Tiffin’s first 20 games, with 12 starts, and is hitting .179 with a double and two
RBI.
Shane Edwards, from Perrysburg High School, was a freshman on the Wittenberg University men’s basketball
team.
He played in 28 games, averaging 5.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
Kayla Encalado, from Lake High School, is a freshman on the Lourdes University softball team.
She has started all 12 games for Lourdes and is hitting .231 with a double, triple, and seven RBI.
Encalado hit a two-run double in an 8-0 win over Carroll (Wis.).
Sarah Fowler, from Otsego High School, is a sophomore defender on the women’s lacrosse team at Trine
University.
Austin Gardner, a Bowling Green resident, was a freshman on the men’s basketball team at the University
of Findlay.
He played in all 30 games for the Oilers this season, averaging 13.3 minutes, 2.3 points per game, and
1.5 assists per game.
Cameron Gardner, from Perrysburg High School, is a senior on the University of Cincinnati women’s track
and field team.
Gardner ran the anchor leg on the 400 relay team which finished third and she was 12th in the 200 (25.19)
at the Black & Gold Challenge in Orlando, Fla.
Emily Gawronski, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the Lourdes University softball team.
She has played in two games this spring.
Brittany George, from Elmwood High School, is a freshman on the Owens Community College softball team.

She has played in all six of Owens’ games and is hitting .455 with two doubles, two triples, and eight
RBI.
Kim Granata, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the University of North Dakota softball team.
She played last season at Kent State.
This spring, she has played in 18 games, making 17 starts. Granata is hitting .204 with two doubles and a
team-high eight RBI.
Brittany Gross, from Elmwood High School, was a freshman on the women’s basketball team at Capital
University.
She played in nine games for a total of 32 minutes for Capital, making one start.
Alyssa Grove, a senior at Perrysburg High School, has signed a national letter of intent to play lacrosse
at Siena Heights.
Cortney Haubert, a Bowling Green resident, is a freshman of the Ashland University women’s track and
field team.
She was 23rd in the mile in 5:30.77 in the GLIAC championship meet.
Kris Hayward, from Eastwood High School, is a sophomore outfielder on the University of Findlay baseball
team.
He has played in eight of Findlay’s first 13 games and has scored four runs.
Austin Hoiles, from Elmwood High School, is a freshman on the University of Findlay baseball team.
Amanda Hotaling, from North Baltimore High School, is a sophomore on the University of Cincinnati women’s
track and field team.
She cleared 12-1 1/2 in the pole vault to finish third at the Black & Gold Challenge in Orlando,
Fla.
In the Atlantic Coast Conference indoor championship meet, she was ninth, clearing 12-2 3/4.
Charlie Hughes, from Perrysburg High School, was a senior on the University of Chicago men’s basketball
team.
He has been injured and played in 15 games, with 13 starts. He averaged 10.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per
game, scoring in double figures 10 times.
Hughes finished sixth in school history with a career field goal percentage of .493.
Jacob Ireland, from Bowling Green High School is a sophomore pitcher at the University of Findlay.
He has appeared in four games this spring and has no decisions with a 6.23 earned run average.
Garrett Jex, from Bowling Green High School, is a junior on the Lourdes University baseball team.
He has played in seven games with six starts and is hitting .200 with a double and two RBI.
Hunter Johnson, from Lake High School is a sophomore on Trine University’s lacrosse team.
Ryan Kohlhofer, from Lake High School, is a sophomore on the Defiance College baseball team.
He has started all 14 of Defiance’s games this season and is hitting .279 with three doubles, a triple,
and seven RBI.
Zach Kolvey, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior on the Adrian College baseball team.
He has played in eight of Adrian’s first 13 games this spring, making seven starts. He has hit a double
and a home run and has two RBI.
Alyssa Kopp, from Bowling Green High School, is a sophomore thrower on the track team at Auburn
University.
Matt Kruzel, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior on the Ashland University baseball team. He played
the last two years at Sinclair Community College.
Zack Leahy, from Rossford High School, was a senior on the Wittenberg University men’s basketball team.

Leahy earned second-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors this season after averaging 11.5
points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.
Lindsey Lehman, from Otsego High School, is a junior on the Lourdes University women’s golf team.
Elizabeth Lemon, a Bowling Green resident, is a senior distance runner on the University of Toledo
women’s cross country team.
