College Scene: Welch wins NCAA title in hammer throw (03-28-14)

(Editor’s Note: The College Scene updates the activities of athletes from Wood County high schools and
county residents who are playing sports at the college level. It is published once a month and includes
sports currently in season as well as any recent college signings, and honors or awards.

Justin Welch, from Eastwood High School, is a junior thrower on the University of Findlay track and field
team.
Welch won the NCAA Division II indoor championship in the hammer throw with an effort of 73-3/4.
The throw was almost 2 1/2 feet ahead of the second-place finisher and was a personal best for Welch and
a Findlay indoor record.
He was second at the GLIAC meet with a 70-7 1/4 effort.
Welch was named the Midwest region field athlete of the year by the United States Track and Field and
Cross Country Coaches Association.
Jay Marquette, a Rossford resident, was a junior on the Lee University men’s basketball team.
Marquette played in 25 games, making 11 starts for the Flames. He averaged 10.5 minutes, 2.2 points and
1.2 rebounds per game.
Trey Marsh, from Elmwood High School, is a sophomore on the Tiffin University baseball team.
He has appeared in four games this season.
Mason Mayberry, from Bowling Green High School, is a sophomore pitcher/infielder on the University of
Findlay baseball team.
He has started three games and is 1-2 with a 6.30 earned run average while pitching 10 innings. He has
struck out 10 and walked nine.
Mayberry got the win in a 1-0 victory over Gannon University. He pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings, allowing
six hits and three walks with six strike outs.
Nick Munger, from Perrysburg High School, is a freshman on the Holy Cross (Ind.) baseball team.
He has appeared in six games, making one start for the Saints. Munger has a 6.57 earned run average and
is 0-2. In 12 1/3 innings he has allowed 17 hits and nine earned runs with six strikeouts and seven
walks.
Peter Munger, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the Ohio Wesleyan baseball team.
He has made three starts and is 1-2 with a 4.19 earned run average in 14 2/3 innings. Munger has allowed
14 hits and eight earned runs with nine strike outs and eight walks.
In a 15-0 win over Ohio Christian, Munger worked the first four innings to earn the win, allowing one hit
with four strikeouts and two walks.
Collin Parrill, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior on the University of Findlay baseball team.
He has pitched in one game this season, allowing one hit in two innings with four strike outs and a walk.

Graesyn Pawlak, a senior at Perrysburg High School, has signed a national letter of intent to play
volleyball at Lake Erie College.
Dustin Peper, from Otsego High School, is a red-shirt freshman infielder on the Bowling Green State
University baseball team.
He’s appeared in four games, going 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Travis Podolak, from Otsego High School, is a junior on the Siena Heights University baseball team.
Podolak has played in six of the Saints’ first 15 games and has two hits in six at-bats.
Katie Reiser, from Elmwood High School, is a senior sprinter on Kent State University women’s track and
field team.
The Golden Flashes won the Mid-American Conference indoor track and field title for the third straight
year.
At the MAC meet, Reiser had the ninth-best time in the preliminaries of the 60 (7.66), but only eight
runners made the finals.
Kori Reiser, from Elmwood High School, is a sophomore thrower on the Bowling Green State University
women’s track team.
Emily Reynolds, from Elmwood High School, is a senior on the University of Findlay softball team.
She is hitting .133 with four RBI this season.
Lindsey Rich, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior pitcher on the Eastern Michigan University
softball team.
She is 3-8 with one save this season with a 4.98 earned run average. Rich has pitched 78 innings,
allowing 105 hits with 42 strike outs and 24 walks.
She has also batted 41 times with seven hits, including two doubles and a home run with two RBI.
Austin Rodesky, from Bowling Green High School, is a freshman pitcher on the Urbana University baseball
team.
He’s 1-0 with a 3.00 earned run average in two appearances, including one start.
He’s pitched six innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) with three walks and one
strikeout.
Cassidy Rolf, a senior at Eastwood High School, has signed to play softball at Owens Community College
next year.
Reid Rothenbuhler, from Elmwood High School, is a senior on the University of Findlay baseball team.
He is hitting .225 with three doubles and six RBI. He drove in the only run of the game in a 1-0 victory
over Gannon University.
Clayton Ruch, from Eastwood High School, is a senior pitcher on the Wayne State baseball team.
In 10 appearances, Ruch is 2-0 with eight saves and a 0.00 earned run average this season. He’s pitched
11 1/3 innings, striking out six and allowing only one walk and six hits. Opponents are hitting .162
against him. He has not allowed a baser runner in six of his 10 outings.
Ruch is in his second season with Wayne State and he is already tied for second on the career saves list
with 18, and is one behind the career leader.
Ruch leads the GLIAC and the nation with his eight saves.
Megan Russ, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore lacrosse player at Trine University.
Nathan Scanlan, from Lake High School, is a sophomore on the Lourdes University baseball team.
Jeffrey Schorsch, from Perrysburg High School, is a freshman on the tennis team at Valparaiso University.

Earlier this month, Schorsch became the first player in Valparaiso men’s tennis history to win 21 singles
matches in a season.
"Jeffrey continues to improve and apply himself every day without any signs of slippage. We are all
enjoying his journey as his game continues to break new barriers," head coach Jim Daugherty said.

He is 22-6 in singles play and 16-7 in doubles play this season.
Kyle Schlumbohm, from Eastwood High School, is a redshirt freshman pole vaulter at Kent State University.

He was ninth in the Mid-American Conference indoor meet, clearing 15-3.
Alec Schmenk, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior pitcher on the University of Toledo baseball team.

In three appearances, Schmenk is 0-0 with a 6.75 earned run average in 2 2/3 innings.
Cody Seifert, from Eastwood High School, is a redshirt junior on the Kent State University men’s track
and field team.
Erin Seiler, a Bowling Green resident, is a sophomore pitcher on the University of Akron softball team.

She has appeared in 11 games, making 10 starts and is 7-2 with one save and a 2.17 earned run average.
Seiler has pitched nine complete games.
In 67 2/3 innings she has allowed 66 hits and 26 walks with 70 strikeouts.
Alyssa Shimel, from Eastwood High School, is a senior on the University of Michigan women’s golf team.

She has played 20 rounds in six events for the Wolverines, and is averaging 78.30 strokes per 18 holes.

At the Hurricane Invitational, Shimel led Michigan with a tie for 19th with a 219 in the 96-player field.
She finished her final round with a 69. Her 219 total, which included 10 birdies, was a record low for
Shimel.
Joe Sickler, from Bowling Green High School, is a senior infielder on the baseball team at the University
of Findlay.
He is hitting .375 and leads the team in home runs with three and RBI with 11, and is tied for the team
lead with three doubles. Of his 18 hits, six have been for extra bases.
Hunter Smith, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the Michigan State baseball team.
Smith has played in four games, with two starts, for the Spartans.
Kyle Smithey, from Elmwood High School, is a sophomore on the University of Findlay men’s track and field
team.
Smithey earned All-America status at the NCAA Division II indoor championships as a member of Findlay’s
distance medley relay team which was fourth in 9:56.99, setting a school record. The Oilers were also
third in the event at the GLIAC championships in 10:01.54.
Ryan Smoyer, from Otsego High School, is a freshman on the University of Notre Dame baseball team.
Smoyer has appeared in five games, making one start, pitching a total of 4 2/3 innings. He has allowed 15
hits, eight earned runs, with three strikeouts and six walks.
Jamie Sobczak, a Perrysburg resident, was a sophomore on the women’s basketball team at Ashland
University.
She played in 25 of Ashland’s 27 games, making 11 starts, and averaging 15.0 minutes per game.
Sobczak averaged 3.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
Emily Stewart, from North Baltimore High School, is a junior on the University of Findlay softball team.

She is hitting .222 with five RBI this season.
Jenna Stoner, from Bowling Green High School, was a sophomore on the women’s basketball team at DePauw
University. DePauw finished 32-2.
She played in 24 of DePauw’s 32 games, averaging 5.9 minutes per game. Stoner had 18 points, 27 rebounds,
and 12 assists.
Lorne Strausbaugh, from Elmwood High School, is a freshman on the Malone University men’s track and field
team.
Nicole Thomas, a senior at Otsego High School, will play softball at Bluffton University.
Corey Tipton, from Grand Rapids, is a freshman on the University of Toledo’s baseball team. He attended
Toledo St. John’s.
Becca Tudor, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the McNeese State University women’s golf
team.
Kendall Tudor, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior on the McNeese State University women’s golf
team.
Adam Tyson, from Elmwood High School, is a senior pitcher on the University of Toledo baseball team.
He has made eight appearances for the Rockets and is 2-0 with two saves and a 5.19 earned run average. In
8 2/3 innings Tyson has allowed six hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks.
April Weaver, from Perrysburg High School, is a sophomore on the women’s tennis team at Washington
College.
Weaver has been named the Centennial Conference player of the week two times this spring.
In six matches this month, Weaver is 5-1 in singles and 6-0 in doubles.
Hillary West, from Lake High School, is a redshirt sophomore on the Lourdes College softball team.
She started the first 12 games of the season for Lourdes and is hitting .269 with two doubles and three
RBI.
Alex Williams, from Perrysburg High School, is a junior pitcher on the University of Findlay baseball
team.
Williams has appeared in six games and is 1-1 with a save. He has an 0.66 earned run average in 10 2/3
innings.
Eric Wymer, a resident of North Baltimore, is a sophomore on the Ohio Northern men’s cross country team.

He was 14th in the 3,000 at the Washington and Lee Carnival, finishing in 15:40.14.
Emily Wyrick, from Perrysburg High School, is a freshman on the University of Toledo women’s cross
country team.
