College Scene: Welch finishes first in weight throw (01-29-14)

Justin Welch, from Eastwood High School, is a junior on the University of Findlay men’s track and field
team. He started his college career at the University of Georgia.
Welch won the weight throw (71-9 1/2 ) at the Findlay Indoor Track and Field Classic. He was also ninth
in the shot put (40-4 1/2 ).
In the Northwest Ohio Invitational, he won the weight throw (69-5 1/4 ) and was sixth in the shot put
(51-11 1/4 ).
In the Doug Raymond Invitational hosted by Kent State, Welch was second in the weight throw (68-7 1/4 )
and sixth in the shot put (50-1 1/4 ).
Jon Juergens, from Eastwood High School, is a senior on the Otterbein College men’s basketball team.
Juergens has started 14 of Otterbein’s 17 games. He is averaging 5.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

Alyssa Kopp, from Bowling Green High School, is a sophomore thrower on the track team at Auburn
University. She competed last season at Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne.
She competed unattached in the Auburn Indoor Invitational, finishing 13th in the shot put (11.17 meters).

Zack Leahy, from Rossford High School, is a senior on the Wittenberg University men’s basketball team.

He has started 16-of-17 games for the Tigers (14-3) and is averaging 10.1 points and 3.0 rebounds per
game. Leahy leads the team with 67 assists and is second on the team with 16 steals.
Elizabeth Lemon, a Bowling Green resident, is a junior on the University of Toledo women’s track and
field team.
She was seventh in the 3,000 (10:37.05) at the Bowling Green Opener.
Lemon was ninth in the mile (5:38.03) in a dual meet with Western Michigan.
Jay Marquette, a Rossford resident, is a junior on the Lee University men’s basketball team.
Marquette has started 11 of Lee’s 16 games this season and is averaging 2.6 points and 2.3 rebounds per
game. He also has 11 assists, nine steals, and five blocked shots.
Kelsea Newman, from Perrysburg High School, is a redshirt freshman on the Youngstown State women’s
basketball team.
She has played in 17 games for the Penguins and is averaging 2.9 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.
Katie Reiser, from Elmwood High School, is a senior sprinter on Kent State University women’s track and
field team.
Reiser was second in the 60 (7.75) in the Doug Raymond Invitational hosted by Kent State.
In a dual meet with Akron, Reiser was sixth in the 60 (7.79), and seventh in the 200 (26.04).
Kori Reiser, from Elmwood High School, is a sophomore thrower on the Bowling Green State University
women’s track team.
She was 14th in the shot put (9.71 meters), and 12th in the weight throw (13.42 meters) at the Tom Wright
Open.
She was eighth in the weight throw (49-8 1/2 ) at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational Saturday, hosted by the
University of Michigan.
At the BG Opener, Reiser was ninth in the weight throw (49-6 1/2 ).
Jeffrey Schorsch, from Perrysburg High School, is a freshman on the tennis team at Valparaiso University.

He won at No. 1 singles, and No. 2 doubles in a victory over Indiana Wesleyan University, and he won in
straight sets at No. 1 singles against Olivet Nazarene University in the season opening matches for the
Crusaders.
Kyle Schlumbohm, from Eastwood High School, is a redshirt freshman on the men’s track and field at Kent
State University.
He was third in the pole vault (15-1) at the Doug Raymond Invitational hosted by Kent State.
He was sixth in the pole vault (14-9 1/2 ) in a dual meet against Akron.
Schlumbohm was eighth in the pole vault at the Goldstein Invitational at Indiana University ,clearing
14-9 1/4.
Cody Seifert, from Eastwood High School, is a redshirt junior sprinter on the Kent State University men’s
track and field team.
He was seventh in the 60 (7.08) in a dual meet with Akron.
Kyle Smithey, from Elmwood High School, is a sophomore on the University of Findlay men’s track and field
team.
At the Findlay Indoor Track and Field Classic, Smithey ran the anchor leg on the winning 1,600 relay, ran
on the winning distance medley team, and was fourth in the 400 (52.18).
In the Northwest Ohio Invitational, Smithey was fifth in the 60 hurdles (8.78), and ran on the
third-place 1,600 relay team.
At the Hillsdale College Winter Opener, he was sixth in the 60 hurdles (8.84), seventh in the 400
(52.49), and ran on the second-place 1,600 relay team.
Jamie Sobczak, a Perrysburg resident, is a sophomore on the women’s basketball team at Ashland
University. She played last season at Wheeling (W.Va.) Jesuit University.
She is averaging 2.7 points and 1.8 rebounds, having played in 14 of Ashland’s 16 games this season.
Jenna Stoner, from Bowling Green High School, is a sophomore on the women’s basketball team at DePauw
University.
She has appeared in 14 of DePauw’s 18 games. DePauw is 18-0.
Trent Waters, from Bowling Green High School, was a freshman on the Wilmington College football team.
Waters changed positions from running back to linebacker, and starting the last four games of the
seasons. He earned the most improved award.
Eric Wymer, a resident of North Baltimore, is a sophomore on the Ohio Northern men’s track and field
team.
He was 13th in the mile (4:31.75) at the Northwest Ohio Invitational at the University of Findlay.
Emily Wyrick, from Perrysburg High School, is a freshman on the University of Toledo women’s track and
field team.
She was fourth in the 600 (1:40.41) at the Bowling Green Opener, and sixth in the 800 (2:24.92) in a dual
meet against Western Michigan.
