The Bowling Green Swim Club is gearing up for its summer schedule, the final Greater Northwestern Ohio Aquatic Conference season in the current pool at City Park.
"The beauty of summer swimming is that there are more than four walls," said Carolyn Strunk, who is in his 17th year with the swim club and 15th year as head coach. "That's what makes it fun to know that we're going to have a new outdoor pool and we won't be limited to indoor swimming year-round.
"It's just exciting to be outside and to be looking at the sky and the trees," she continued. "For some swimmers that fresh air is nice to have."
The GNOAC championships will be held in Bowling Green in July.
Strunk said she expects approximately 110 swimmers to participate with the club this summer. The team holds two practices per day.
"Those who need to be taught how to swim, we teach them how to swim. For those than can already swim, we have them continue to work on their stroke development ... and if they can swim, continue to work on their development, " Strunk said about the younger swimmers on the team. She expects to have approximately 40 swimmers in the 8-and-under age group this summer.
"With the older swimmers, it's more endurance based and also trying to balance that out with strength (work) and with a little bit of stroke work," Strunk continued. "Most of them have gotten to where they are because of what they have learned before. So it's more important to be able to train to be able to swim the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and make sure they are successful with that or longer events, depending on what their best event is."
Helping Strunk this summer are: George Leatherman, who is the former head coach for the Findlay Area Swim Team; Keri Buff, the former head coach at Bowling Green State University, with the 8-and-unders; and current BGSU coaches Petra Martin and Michael Shelby who are helping Strunk with the junior high and high school-age swimmers.
The remaining summer schedule is June 7 Napoleon at Bowling Green; June 12 Defiance/Ayersville at Bowling Green; June 21 at Bryan; June 26, at Defiance/Ayersville; June 28 Wauseon at Bowling Green; July 2 at Ottawa; and July 14-15 GNOAC championship meet at Bowling Green.
