Al-Mar Lanes is again welcoming many of the best professional seniors to its annual PBA 50 Regional Midwest Classic
The Professional Bowlers Association holds events in both its regular and "50" divisions, which was formerly called the senior tour.
Defending champion Kevin Foley and the 2011 champion Tom Baker are among the noted entrants in the event which will be held Wednesday and Thursday.
The local entrants will be led by Al-Mar league bowler Steve Jakubowski and Perrysburg resident Larry Smith.
Other notables include Jack Jurek, Guppy Troup (2004 champion), Ron Mohr, Wayne Webb, Roy Buckley, Dale Eagle, Henry Gonzalez. Sammy Ventura and Dale Strike.
Former champions of the event entered include Tim Kauble (2000, 2001) and Bill Henson (2006).
"It's always a pleasure to host the seniors and renew longtime friendships," said proprietor Bill Wammes.
Practice sessions and the pro-am events were to be held today.
All the bowlers will bowl eight games of qualifying on Wednesday on two separate squads.
On Thursday, the top 32 bowlers will bowl an additional four games at noon before the field is cut in half to the top 16. Those bowlers will roll three more games at 2:30 p.m.
After those games, the field will again be cut in half to the top eight. Those eight will bowl two more games at 4:30 p.m. to cut the field for the final time to four.
Those four will bowl one last game at 5:30 p.m. to determine the champion, based on total pins after 18 grueling games over two days.
The bowlers will compete on the PBA50 Cheetah oil pattern.
The PBA says this pattern "measures 35 feet in length and is the shortest of the five named patterns."
Organizers say sometimes players tend to migrate toward the outside of the lane to take advantage of "more pristine surface areas."
There is no admission charge.
Gerdeman Insurance and Al Smith automobile dealerships are the titled sponsors.
