A local youth bowler has earned her way to the national finals of the annual Pepsi tournament to be held in Indianapolis. Sofia Calderon finished fourth in the state tournament which recently concluded in Columbus. She competed in the 11-and-under girls division. Although she has turned 12, she was 11 at the time of the United States Bowling Congress official date for age for the season. Sofia had games of 147, 163 and 183 for a 493 series with her handicap she totaled 772. The top seven in her division advanced to the national. She also earned a $200 scholarship for her effort. In the same division, Chayce Tussing finished in 57th place with her 369 series and 714 handicap total, while Cailyn Overhulse tied for 66th place with a 539 series and 710 handicap total. There were 259 girls in competition. Other local bowlers in the field were Camryn Tussing, Erin Spangenberg and Madison Bagrowski. In the boys 11-and-under division, Garrett Genson earned at $50 scholarship for 30th place. He recorded a 253 series for 744 with handicap. Adam Jasso finished 53rd in the division with his 329 series and 731 handicap total Thomas Rieman cracked the top 100 finishing in 100th with a 709 handicap total. Brandon Knell and Chandler Serres also competed in the event that featured 409 entrants. Michael Young missed qualifying for the nationals by nine pins, finishing eighth in the 12-an-over boys handicap division. He had games of 245, 218 and 203 in his six-game total of 1,166 for a 1,514 handicap total. He earned a $50 scholarship. Finishing 16th in the division was Jared Haas, who recorded a pair of 235 games, along with a 228 in his 1,225 set, giving him 1,477 with handicap. He won a $50 scholarship. Andrew Jasso also earned a $50 scholarship for finishing 42nd in the older boys handicap division. He totaled 1,125 actual and 1,437 with handicap. His high games were 218 and 213. Tyler Noon, Jacob Houtz, Austin Jasso and Lucas Jenne were also among the 454 entrants in that boys 12 and over division. Kirsten Knell finished in the middle of 244 bowlers in the girls 12-and-over division. In the boys scratch division, Justin Overhulse totaled 1,265 for the six games to finish in 35th place. Cameron Walter finished in 52nd place at 1,226. There were 150 boys entered with the top 20 taking scholarship money. Competing in the girls scratch division were three bowlers who all struggled a bit at the state event. Jessica Young ended in 46th place at 1,053, Denise Miller in 59th at 951 and Alisha Noon in 60th at 950. There were 67 bowlers entered. Family tourney: Several area teams competed last weekend in the state finals of the Bowling Centers Association of Ohio annual Family Tournament. The final results were not available. Two teams were in the elite of their events. With one day remaining, Kelly Miller and Jacob Wint were in second place in the Adult/Youth division, for youth bowlers 11-and-under. The youth, Miller, entered with a 73 average and rolled a pair of 110 games and a 311 series; with her adult partner, Wint adding a 235 high in his 547 set for a 1,419 handicap total. Madison Bagrowski and her father, Chris, were third in the Parent/Youth division at 1,426. The older Bagrowski, had a 253 and 246 in his 701 series, while his daughter (76 average) had games of 92, 95 and 106 for 293. Denise Miller and her adult partner, Pancha Melendrez, are fifth in the Adult/Teen division at 1,318. Miller had a 502 set; while Melendrez added games of 214 and 236 for a 648 series. Cameron Walter and his mother, Jodie Wint, are seventh in the Parent/Teen division at 1,351. Walter edged his mother 622 to 601. He had high games of 225 and 204 while she shot a 225. Publication note: This is the last scheduled column for the season. Depending on news, there may be a column or two during the summer. The 11th Frame will return in the fall for its 25th season.
