To the Editor: What's not to like about a bike path?

I was surprised to read the negative response to the proposed bike trail linking the community center to the high school. What’s not to like about a bike path? Do bikes pollute? No, they have no exhaust. Do bikes make noise? No, there is no motor. Do bikers drink, litter or play loud music while biking? Generally not, bikers are busy pedaling to get to their destination. Here are some other statistics: (bikesbelong.org)
•  Most of our car trips are short, 50 percent are less than 3 miles. Biking Is Ideal for Short Trips.
•  Drivers purchase 15 billion dollars worth of gas each year and waste 4.8 billion hours sitting in traffic congestion. Biking Saves Money.
• Homes are valued up to 10 percent higher if there are near a bike path. Bike Paths Are Highly Regarded.
• Biking can help you live longer. Individuals that bike have better weight, blood pressure and insulin levels. Bikers Stay Healthy.
• The bike industry supports 1.1 million jobs, sells 14.9 million bikes and generates $1.8 billion in taxes each year. Biking Boosts the Economy.
• The average household spends $8,758 per year to own and operate a car or more than they spend on food. Biking Helps Family Budgets.
What’s not to like about a bike path? If we want our town to thrive, we should do everything we can to promote biking. If you don’t bike, it may be time to try it, you will save money, feel better and enjoy the ride.

Penny-"Thanks" for the encouraging thoughts and statstics. A lot of people around BG and Wd Cty just like to compaine and be heard. There is no reason why the bike trail should be a problem. If my memory strikes me well, I think most if not all the monies used was received by grants and the rest will be too, so you tell me why anyone would complaine? As you put it, it's less fuel used and in my opinion good excerise.

If the trail is not taking away from private lands, is not funded by tax money (including government grants), then great.

Biking does have wonderful health benefits, and as well is an easy way (and as you note cheaper) method of short distance travel.

Most of your points are spot-on, the problem is why are those of us that do not use bike trails forced to pay for them. The upkeep is enormous and the rangers charged with monitoring them seem to have no restrictions on the use of their taxpayer supplied vehicles.

Value for the community is ultimately a community value whose benefits are shared by everybody. If you want to be an island that has no sense of responsibility to others, then don't live in a community.

CW-well put. There's going to be money spent somewhere. As for self-employed, do you use the swings at City Park? We are paying for a lot things one may not use. As CW put it move out of town.

Well--I didn't say "move out of town." Simply, if you are going to live in a town, then you need to be prepared that there are shared concerns, in which you have a say, and you shouldn't go all "NIMBY" because the community you share is your "BY."

Do you use all the streets & highways, the sidewalks ? Who pays for them? Maybe the upkeep & Park Rangers money is coming from the grants ? I don't know,Anyone know about this? Also, I don't go to school here anymore, but I support the schools, and the Bike Trail is an inviting attraction for all ages considering to buy, build or move to Bowling Green. As long as it does not require cutting onto private property, I see no problem with them.Another feature to Bowling Green.

I just feel the need to point out that while the Slippery Elm Trail does use rangers, this trail from the Community Center to the High School is a City project through Parks & Recreation, which does not employ rangers. The grant is coming from Wood County Parks but they will not be "patrolling" it, on foot, bike, or "taxpayer supplied" vehicles.

Why not add a shooting range at the Rec center?

What a great use of the bike path allowing people to ride to Rec to enjoy Americas original active participation sport. Shooting.

Shooting sports are a great confidence builder and what a better use of all the open space around the Rec than to install an outdoor shooting range.

I am glad our Parks department had such vision to build in such an open space so BG can be a leader in public Recreation.

R1-My husband would be flying high if a shhoting range would be added. Maybe something could be arranged with the NG since they share the building. Gee everyone has good points except self-employed. There always has to be a grinch in every crowd,

Same here, it's a great Sport, even Boy Scouts would love it. Also a great way to introduce young people to the proper attitude toward guns & the sport.

I agree with the Shooting Range, Skeet Shooting is a great sport. Years ago, Grand Rapids Sportsman's Club, now gone, had a great Trap Club, and a big following. We miss it dearly, was suprised at the amount of Bowling Green people that were there.

Upkeep of roads is enormous. Should bikers be exempt from those expenses Ms. Self Employed?

BigPicture, those roads you speak of are something that is required for a modern society to function. In what way is that comparable to a recreational bike path?

A modern society or a society consisting of a bunch of lazy people who could care less about the planet?

B-Why do you think there is going to be a big expense to keep this bike trail up? I guess we should do away with streets too. After all it's a big up-keep. While we are at it let's take down all the street lights and stop lights they are all a "Big" up-keep.

...a bunch of strangers riding near your backyard, how would you like that? It creates the potential for litter, theft, vandalism, etc.

There are strangers in FRONT of your house! It's called "living in a community!"

Do try to join us in the real world!

No need to be harsh, Brian. I love my community, but a public space (the real world) can have its share of problems. Ask anyone near the campus, near a cemetary, near a school, near the public library, near a public parking lot, etc. Where people are allowed to gather publicly, things can happen.

As long as those 'things' are not near your property, right?

OH wait, there is a public STREET out front! (Unless you live in a gated fortress.)

If you really loved your community, you would be less apathetic about strangers and less disparaging about public 'problems.'

What problem do you have with the public riding their bikes past your house? "Potential" problems? Give us a break. You will have that in ANY PLACE in the world!

First, not being apathetic or disparaging about public problems, just vigilant. Ever had your house broken into? I have.

Second, public streets are hardly gathering places where people can hang out.

Third, I've asked you politely not to be harsh. I'm simply trying to dialogue and debate with respect. That's what these forums are for. You're preaching love of community, yet you're hardly being my "neighbor." Your words like "join us in the real world" and "Give us a break" aren't very friendly. That said, I'm out.

Whatever. Bye-bye,"neighbor." Vigilance and fear are 2 different puppies.

If you are unwilling to pay a little for things like a bike path that make a community more pleasant, pack up and move to one of the many towns around here that doesn't have parks and bike trails and pools. They are pretty easy to find. You can recognize them by the boarded-up buildings and vacant lots. You should be able to find a place really cheap.
