To the Editor: Wants brand name restaurant

I agree with Howard and Pat Williams and would love to see a brand name restaurant in BG. Their suggestions of Longhorn Steak House, Olive Garden or a Red Lobster would be wonderful and I have heard this expressed so many times from friends.
BG is overrun with trendy college age eateries. Eating at Bob Evans or Big Boy are O.K., but not for every occasion. I truly believe BG would benefit from these suggestions.

I would agree having choices are excellent. But the fact is this is a free market economy and if they choose to open in BG it is their choice. If they choose not to invest in BG financially then it is their decision as it is their money.

Downtown restaurants like Naslada and DiBenedettos are not "trendy college age eateries," though they do attract area professionals of all ages, including business owners and faculty at the local university (is that too much "college" for Ms. Davis?) As others have pointed out, "brand name" is not the same thing as quality.

The chain restaurants will come to BG if it works with their business model, but with outfits in Toledo and Findlay, it might not.

It's simply amazing that you have to exress your opinion on everything and attempt to prove how others are wrong. You have some issues to work out. Good luck.

What's your problem? He posted that note almost a week ago and nothing else. It is also a perfectly sensible response to the LTE. I think you are the one with issues.

Bigger is not better. Most of the chains use frozen, canned & reheat food. Been there worked there. Support our local merchants and eat healthier at Mom & Pop restaurants. Keep the money here in Bowling Green instead of going to Corp. Headquarters in some other town & state.

We have a fine dining Italian Restaurant, locally owned, and they cook from scratch, Olive Garden does not. We have several restaurants that serve excellent steaks, Becketts, City Tap, Trotters, Sam B's,Easy Street, many that use local butchers & produce venders. We have several Mexican Restaurants, numerous oriental restaurants, as well as Irish restaurant too.Not to mention all the sport type restaurants that feature a diverse menu of items to choose from. If you want to eat generic food then go to where they serve that.People in Bowling Green are really lucky to NOT have chains here, the food come in frozen, canned, or heat & serve, meaning more MSG and not fresh. Support our local owned, operated & locally staffed Restaurants !!

This letter is an attempt at sarcasm, right? If not, Ms. Davis obviously has the right to her opinion, but it's difficult for me to reconcile or understand.

I have eaten at Longhorn, Outback, Olive Garden, Red Lobster and everybody's favorite place featuring rocking chairs on their quaint front porch. (Yeah right!) All good enough in their own way, but nothing special. This letter is in response to another letter which generated an abundance of comments here. Reference that for additional fodder. But leave it best said, BG is rich in good quality food. One person remarked about Al-Mar, which I had thought of, but feared the nay-sayers who do not know what great food is served there including steaks and other meat from local butcher shop. Their Friday night ribs are the best I've ever had. Excellent flavor and tenderness. Won't repeat all here. El Zarape for Mexican, Trotters or Al-Mar for steak, etc. etc. BG has quality food without the chain gang.

BG doesn't have the population to command much more than what we have. Most of the brands that would locate in BG are already up in Maumee, Perrysburg, Rossford, and down in Findlay. That puts BG too close to too many locations and without enough residents to make it profitable for major chains to locate here. The strongest retail growth is on the south side, but that is too far removed from I-75. The Stroh Center is helping the east side, but without more hotel space I don't see it being enough. The north side remains a growing wasteland.

Wow! There are actually people who prefer chain restaurants to local restaurants. It takes all kinds I suppose.

I also wish that BG had some more and better restaurants, but I would have to be close to starvation to eat the crap they serve at Olive Garden or Red Lobster.

Chipotle, Starbucks, Tim Horton's, McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Jimmy John's, Subway, Qdoba, Pizza Hut, Frisch's, Arby's, Rally's, KFC, Panera, Taco Bell, let's see... who am I missing? There's your brand-name ("chain") restaurants. We have plenty.

And don't tell me Olive Garden is a "restaurant". It's just fast food that takes longer to get to the table and costs more.

You want Olive Garden? Go to Toledo. BG has plenty of FANTASTIC places to eat, if you just broaden your palate and horizons a little. "Chain" is not a synonym for quality. "Chain" means "shackle". Think about it.

Well said! Maybe they need to look into something called, "Toledo Restaurant Week" that is happening February 21st - March 2nd. There are a ton of great places to eat in the Toledo area, including Bowling Green.

These letters are really starting to be hilarious. It's obvious the authors of these letters haven't been exposed to great food, nor learned to appreciate it.

Is it difficult to reconcile her understanding? The food options in BG suck, you might have one or two places that are above average but nothing worth the trouble of going downtown for. I don't care what the name of the restaurant is, if it has good food I will go out of my way to patronize those places but BG just doesn't have it, sorry.

My wife & I tried City Tap last night for their Steak Night. We went about 5:30. To our surprise there were about 30 people in there already eating, steak. None of them appeared to be students either. We had very good service, and the food was REALLY good, the steak, cooked to our request, salad & choose of potatoes were very generous portions too. The price was unbeatable. Don't think we have had a more flavorful steak since the OLD KAUFMAN'S days, we will definetely go back. Oh, and parking was not a problem either, right out front, or there is a parking lot outback.

What BG needs is a Romano's Macaroni Grill. I could be shackled to that anytime!
