To the Editor: Religious tolerance is praised

The views of Mark Richard ("BG man says there is only one true God," Sentinel, May 30) are intolerant of religious views which do not incorporate Jesus Christ.  When he says that "The goal of Islam is world domination and would substitute our Constitution with Sharia law," he apparently ignore his implication that the goal of Christianity is world domination and would substitute our Constitution with the Christian Gospel.
He clearly suggests that Muslims should accept Jesus as their God when they have the opportunity to do so.  It is ironical for Mr. Richard to say that the Muslims' Mohammad taught that "if they believe that Jesus is the Son of God they would go to hell," and then quote from Scripture that if they do not believe in Jesus, then they are "condemned already," even before they go to hell.  Sheriff Wasylyshyn has not "cheapened the Gospel" because he rightly realizes the significance of religious tolerance.  The intolerant Mr. Richard want to impose his particular interpretation of religion on all people.

Logical consistency and awareness of their own hypocrisy are not common character traits of zealots.

Christopher your response is so true. I think you need to look into a mirror yourself regarding the character traits of a zealot.

What are you talking about?

This guy is probably the most level-headed poster on this blog. You must be one of those intolerant zealots in Wood County.

Christopher, I think YTYK meant the second sentence for the letter writer. Your comment is right on the mark.

which are about preventing employees of large institutions, including colleges and hospitals, from having access through health care to services because of the religious dictates of their employers. They are all about giving employers greater civil rights than workers. Very American, that.

Amen to that. The establishment clause says the government may not establish a state religion. It doesn't say the government must/can enforce the religious beliefs of one group upon another.

This is precisely the point misunderstood by many of today's fundamentalist Christians and Tea-Birchers. They have somehow been led to believe that the U.S. Constitution is all about enshrining and imposing the beliefs and attitudes of the "majority," when the opposite was the case for the founders. I have had many conversations with Christians--even without the cloak of online anonymity--who insist that being asked to tolerate different faiths is an imposition on their religious freedom. It is this attitude that calls the contraception compromise an "assault on religious freedom," for instance.

Fundamentalist Jews,Christians and Moslems all represent a clear and present danger to the American fabric of tolerance and acceptance. Fire and brimestone Christian preachers, Secluded and outspoken ultra conservative Hassidic Jews don't want to allow nonjews to live in the neighborhoods and Firebrand Muslim Imams all fill me with a sense of disgust and dread. They do not represent their people who share the base ideologies of the respective faiths. They are all an abomination
