To the Editor: Relationship violence crosses all boundaries

I am writing in response to the article, "Family Finally Finds Justice." I would like to share
heart-felt condolences with the Bell family and gratitude for sharing your story with the community. I
cannot imagine the loss of a child, especially under such heinous circumstances, or the prolonged
journey of justice and healing. It sounds like Bryan was a very special man whose life was cut short
beyond comprehension.
I also wanted to take a moment and validate the article. Relationship violence crosses all boundaries –
gender, social status, faith, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. And as mentioned, oftentimes,
relationship abuse is presented as something that only happens to female victims. The reality is that
women are more likely to be murdered or seriously injured as a result of male violence; however, this
kind of violence can happen to anyone. The level of controlling and possessive behavior that Bryan
experienced, the stalking and harassing phone messages, the weapons that Tanya Slimick owned, and the
fact that he was murdered after leaving her, are all among some of the greatest risk factors for any
victim of relationship violence at risk of homicide.
Sometimes, because of assumptions about domestic abuse, it might seem like there is no help available for
some victims. No one deserves abuse! If you are in a relationship and experiencing abusive and/or
controlling behaviors, if you are receiving harassing phone calls, put-downs, and do not feel safe in
your own home, know that help is available. Please call the Link at 419-352-1545 and ask to speak to an
advocate. Help is available.
At the Cocoon Shelter, advocates are available 24 hours a day to offer support and assistance in safety
planning and working through the trauma of abuse. Our shelter welcomes adult victims with or without
children – any person regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity. We only wish
Bryan had this kind of support prior to his tragic death.
