To the Editor: Reasonable debate needed on issues such as gun rights

You have made a significant contribution in your editorial "Middle ground for gun laws" (6/25)
by setting the debate as it should be: "not ant-gun but anti-gun fanatic," and "even good
things need limits." I would like to go on record as one who respects everything that is endowed by
our Constitution. That includes the Second Amendment.
As a nation we cannot afford not have reasonable debate on vital issues without getting emotional though
it is difficult to do. As a strong supporter of rights including gun rights, I cannot rationally support
one right and oppose another in the same Constitution. But still you cannot abdicate to exercise your
God given reason. Immanuel Kant tells us that we use only 10 percent of our reason and warns "Out
of timber so crooked as that from which man is made, nothing entirely straight can be built."
For 10 years I have been asking my friends supporting gun rights to help me understand how one can defend
oneself if caught by surprise by a drive by shooting or busy shopping in a mall or just walking on a
pavement even with a loaded gun. Two well-trained officers fully armed, having pizza could do nothing to
save their lives. A convincing answer to this question I am hoping will put an end to this needless
debate. If the debate still continues then surely we have anti-gun fanatics who should just be ignored.
