To the Editor: Portage should have made more cuts at earlier time

I must respectfully disagree with the editor. Council could have and should have reduced their salaries and those of the village administrator and the clerk/treasurer to near zero, by whatever means possible, early on in this fiscal crisis.
Cutting back on monthly utilities, such as natural gas and electric, telephone, high speed internet.
They could have made the hard choices, but didn't.
I had suggested a 3-mill property tax to fund a limited police department, that would have raised $18,000 per year.
Granted the chief would have greatly reduced wages, the mayor's court would be gone and fuel saving measures implemented, but we could have had a very basic police department.
