To the Editor: Man misses politeness, responsibility of past

0

I lived my childhood in the 50’s. It seems that our country started its cultural fall during the 60’s and
hasn’t stopped. Gone are the days when you could send your preteen child to downtown Toledo on a bus and
not have to worry about their safety. Here are some more longings of the past:
1. Leaving your house unlocked because people respected your property and your hard work.
2. Leaving the car keys in the ignition while your car was in the driveway.
3. Being a child walking down the sidewalk talking to an adult without fear of being abducted.
4. Being an adult and saying, "Hi" to a child on the sidewalk without having someone call the
police because you might be a pedophile.
5. Driving through a big city without worrying about being carjacked.
6. Young adults respecting their teachers, parents, elders, and law enforcement.
7. A time when "gangs" were groups of adults connected to the underworld.
8. A time when truant officers actually visited a home, talked to the parents, and brought the child to
school.
9. A time when a four letter word was "darn" and no one ever used the "F" word. Today
it flows from fifth graders’ mouths.
10. A time when parents supported a teacher’s choice of discipline for their misbehaving child.
The culture in this country has changed. Parents have lost control of their children. They don’t know
where they are, who they are with, or when they will be home. The family unit and its influence has
deteriorated. Children are becoming adults without having the proper set of values.
For those who wonder why the number of concealed carry permits has risen, it would behoove them to look
to the past when the need to carry was more uncommon. Don’t condemn the CCW permit holders for
protecting themselves and their families. If the radical left would spend more effort defending the
rights of the victims rather than the criminals, maybe the need to carry protection would diminish.
Defense attorneys are presenting cases based upon their client’s bad childhood and are winning. To quote
an actor on MASH, "Horse Hockey!" No one wants to accept responsibility for their actions. Fix
the overall deteriorated American culture and maybe the battle for who needs to carry personal
protection will be less of a controversial subject.
