To the Editor: Man criticizes letter writer's comments re: homosexualtiy

I am writing in regards to a letter written by Terry Smith on Aug. 1.
He discussed his frustration with the current state of our world and how the weather, etc. are "signs" from God.
While I respectfully agree with Mr. Smith that the terrors of war and general lack of "any" type of faith is sadly lacking, his comments concerning homosexuality were careless and irresponsible.
Homosexuality is "not" a choice! The American Psychiatric Association declassified it as a mental disorder in 1973. Several decades of research and clinical experience have led mainstream medical organizations to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience.
Misquote the Bible and put your pre-conceived bias on it all you want- your ignorance has social and personal impacts!
Continued ignorance may also have negative consequences, especially in the alarming trend of LGBT youth suicides over the past three years. Where these incidences occur, they are associated with experiences of verbal bias in their environments. Vocal support from important people in the teen's life can provide a very helpful counterpart. Youth need caring and support, appropriately high expectations, and the encouragement to participate actively with peers. They need a sense of autonomy and purpose, to excitedly look toward a promising future.
What they do not need is fear created by ignorance and misinformation.
While I agree with yearnings to go back to a simpler time of "the good 'ole days", I am also wise enough to know that as Christians, we are all equal and we were all taught to love.
Pay it forward. Ask your local school districts about a Gay/Straight Alliance, volunteer at a suicide prevention hotline, go to a P-Flag meeting, or simply offer a friendly handshake and introduce yourself to a lesbian, gay or bisexual person and "walk a mile in their shoes" before you condemn their behavior.

A fine letter indeed, Mr. Antesky! I do wish more of your co-religionists were as humane as you, sir!

You "GET" it! It's nice to hear a voice of reason.

Fine letter indeed. Any true believer in any Religion learns first & foremost that we should love one another, and respect each other. I agree, with this letter completely!

Mr. Smith just doesn't believe in live and let live. I'm sure he associates with homosexuals and doesn't even know it. As a veteran I know brave men who slogged through the rice paddies who were homosexual and didn't broadcast it until years later. Like it or not we are all Gods creation and Mr. Smith should ask the almighthy why he/she created all of us. He might even take into consideration that God's punishment is due to bigotry against Homosexuals. Anyways, I have some very good Gay friends who I wouldn't trade for Mr. Smith.

It doesn't help matters when the Right wing fanatics fuel the fire by doing their level best to keep people afraid! Fear homosexuals..fear Liberals..fear Muslims..fear Socialists, immi grants, and feminists! Communists, pot smokers,99%ers,atheists,an d unions. The list goes on. Hmmm..guess we should be afraid of EVERYBODY! Fear=control!

Some of the greatest problems we have is the news media. We can all respect and love every single person on this earth no matter what or who they are but someone has to be the first one to take pictures and write stories and that seems to stir everyone up. There are many stories that don't need to be published especially if one has to take a stand. Our country and world is screwed up because someone has to put the story in our face. We wouldn't be exposed to bad info if the media didn't rub it into our faces as they have over the last 100 years. At least with comments like this we can be better heard in our local community.

Sure, if people really had a live-and-let live attitude that extended to equal rights for all.

The left is hate-filled because we stand up for everyone's rights and won't tolerate intolerance and bigotry? That seems to be the new right wing bigot's defense these days. smg

It's good to see an intelligent response and I whole-heartedly agree.

To those who believe homosexuality is a choice, I must ask: are you heterosexual? When did you CHOOSE to be heterosexual?

I didn't choose my heterosexual orientation, I was born that way. I couldn't be homosexual if I tried. It just doesn't compute for me. Likewise, it doesn't compute for a homosexual to be otherwise. They are born that way.

I didn't choose to be female, I was born that way. I didn't choose my ethnicity, I was born that way. I didn't choose to be born in the year of my birth, it just happened.

Point made?

Your point is made to me, JB. But it is amazing to me how unwilling some people are to concede that what is not a choice for them is not a choice for someone different. And how these very same people will invoke religious arguments to support their position. If anything IS a choice, it is religion. Unfortunately, the same stunted reasoning holds, and freedom of religion only means freedom for their own religion, including the right to impose those religious strictures on people who don't share their religion. Why? Because who they are and what they believe is the truth, and people who are different don't have the truth. Argument ended and (in their view) argument won.

It isn't, but ignorance and pompous self-righteousness surely are. Judge not, lest ye be judged.

It is a choice of lifestyle and should not be given any special rights by normal people other than sending them to therapy!
