To the Editor: ‘Joe’ needs study of advanced economic history

Apropos “ ‘Got to do’ …. by Joe Average (Opinion 6/20) talks about the difference between then and now when there was a common feeling that we were a nation.
I humbly suggest the writer to seriously study advanced economic history. Unlike other federations our federal principle had a tough time being forged to achieve a blend between the centrifugal and centripetal forces of state action.  Finally only when 13 of them joined to do it, it was more an act of defiance against their colonial rulers to mark a beginning of a new chapter on self-governance.  It took eighty-four years before the very idea of a nation got split in the bloodiest civil war. It was only then we heard the words, ‘government of the people, by the people and for the people’ at Gettysburg.
Then we go through a painful history of struggle — struggle by women for franchise, by workers for collective bargaining, the civil rights movement and still the problem of wage discrimination. As for self-governance from day one we have developed a government, of by and for the lobby. The story has more but there is no space here to recount it.
I agree that currently the Congress and the President have failed to protect we the people. But we get what we deserve. Above all it is absurd to talk about shutting down the government. Voting for less waste is not the same thing as less government. An efficient government is the only way we can really build ourselves as a nation. To expand on this idea will take more space than the whole issue of this Sentinel. One needs at least a 101 understanding of the subject of Comparative Economic Systems.
As for freedom the day we can scrap the Bill of Rights and institute a Bill of Duties, is when we can begin to preserve the very little we seem to have achieved by way of civilized values. Maybe this July 4th we can think about that. That is the Gandhian way. Unfettered freedom will be our ultimate undoing.
