To the Editor: Insurance hike matches Social Security hike

I received a letter from Social Security stating that in January I would have a $36 increase in my disability check.
This is the first increase in several years. I was so happy! I could buy some real meat instead of dog food! A few days ago I received a letter from my health insurance stating my premium was going up.....$36! Coincidence? I have one thing to say to that: "Woof".

Why complain, the Speaker Of The House months ago stated he wanted to use the the SSI surplus to pay the debt for the resent wars.Eric Cantor wanted a 17% reduction in current payments to retirees. If Mitt made it to office, you might be looking at eating tree bark.Believe me I do feel your pain, society is changing fast.I never thought I would see the day when half of our population has no compassion for those who came before them.Things will only change when a large majority of the population goes hungry sorry to say.

Snapper,

The problem is not compassion. I have plenty of compassion for those less fortunate, and those who came before. I do not make light of Sharon’s situation.

But it was those very ones who "came before" whom, through their elected officials, created a program that is today unsustainable.

It's only going to get worse, between an ever shrinking ratio of workers to recipients, longer life spans, and the numerous times the "trust fund" has been robbed by our representatives in congress.

And, while we can blame "them" in Washington, we send them there, keep them there, and have turned a blind eye to their chicanery, especially when it benefited us, at least in the short term.

Sad to say, but "we the people" have no one to blame but ourselves. Perhaps we all deserve to eat dog food!

Wow. I agree with Defender, too, this time. Except for maybe the dog food part.

Sadly, most of our salaries are in the same boat or worse. Many of us have waited several years for raises and, when we do get them, they are so minute that they were long since offset by the increase in our insurance. Oh, and I prefer cat food. At least the tuna looks more like real food:(
