To the Editor: Gun laws stop good guys, not criminals

I find it ironic that in a community, like BG, which prides itself on its level of education, many still
cannot grasp the concept that "gun-free" zones are not gun-free and are not safe havens for
citizens, young or old. If one merely spends a little time researching the facts instead of basing their
opinion on "gut-feelings" one would discover that the vast majority of gun violence and
killings occur in these erroneously named "gun-free" zones.
I could list them all, but that would take more than the allotted 400 words in this letter. Gun laws do
not decrease gun violence in those areas … they increase them because criminals will not obey those
laws any more than they obey other laws. All these laws do is keep law abiding citizens from carrying
weapons … and the only way you stop bad guys with guns is to have good guys with guns present. If you
find that logic hard to swallow think about who does stop criminals with guns. That’s right … law
biding people (to include law enforcement officers) who have guns and can deter, apprehend, or stop them
dead in their tracks. How about using a little common sense and less emotionally charged misconceptions.
Show that the people in BG are intelligent and not motivated by irrationality.
