To the Editor: Gun law should have limits

The BG City Council seems to be stymied as to how to respond to demands to allow guns in the city parks
[Sentinel Tribune, Tuesday, 6/3/2014]. I think there are a couple ways this matter should be handled.

Of course, there are many regulations that restrict what is otherwise permissible. People with cars can
drive, but not on the wrong side of the road. People driving lawn mowers cannot drive on busy public
streets. People on bicycles cannot ride them on sidewalks downtown or on I-75. People using boats on
lakes must have life preservers on board. People flying airplanes cannot buzz over the city 100 feet off
the ground. These are all sensible restrictions.
Guns are lethal weapons. That is mainly why people have them. They can be used responsibly or carelessly.
Why should there not be limits or restrictions on how and where they are carried?
Here is my suggestion. Anyone who is in possession of a gun in a city park must have specific proof of
liability insurance or have posted a Financial Responsibility Bond with the City in the amount of $2000.
The regulation could be posted at the entrance to the city parks. Anyone carrying a gun who is not able
to prove Financial Responsibility would be subject to arrest, possible jail time and fines. Such an
ordinance might discourage careless behavior, and would at least cover some damages caused by accidental
or purposeful discharge of guns in public parks.
