To the Editor: Fur vs. feathers discrimination

It is always heartwarming to see video clips of rush- hour traffic on the freeway coming to a standstill as folks jump out of cars to rescue a hapless dog. Hooray for humanity.
Fast forward to midmorning of July 4 when destinations do not include work, but merely a trip to secure more hot dog buns for the barbecue.
A duckling is trapped in one lane of the AW Trail with concrete barriers on each side.
I exit my car and race after him. We run back and forth time and time again as I beg for someone in the stopped line of cars behind me to help. No one does and then horns are honking and I know the little fella is doomed as I am forced to drive away.
Perhaps if he had fur instead of feathers it would have made a difference.
Hope you enjoyed your hot dogs.

I understand where you are coming from. Humans have modified the landscape of this planet in a very short time, with little to no regard for any other creature. The earth is not ours to conquer. Don't stop trying to help animals! Let people beep, be angry, etc.

I understand your love of all animals, as I do also. But you made a mistake by stopping like you did. You could have caused an accident, or gotten hurt yourself. Your running like you did just cause the duckling to panic & get stressed out more. And you wonder why no one would help you, no one wants to get or cause anyone to get hurt. What would have been better would have pulled off the road, call the State Patrol and let them handle it.

The poor thing. You were brave to try to help. It is very sad that we do not coexist more effectively with the non-human creatures on this planet - that the places ducks and trees live are destroyed for roads and power lines. There are not enough humans standing up for ducks and trees, but thank you for being one of them!

Begging people to stop and help doesn't work. When one begs and pleads, the energy there is one of doubt. DEMANDING that they stop and help, in a firm but friendly way, does work.

I stopped traffic on Jackman once to help an injured dog. I stood there with my arm up and a look on my face that said STOP NOW BECAUSE I AM NOT MOVING, and I sent out energy saying the same. They stopped and we were able to move the dog. Next time, just remember to BELIEVE inside that they are stopping.

Hopefully the little duck's survival instincts were solid and he made it.

Thank you, Karen Wolf. Your actions might have saved it and you did the best you could. Others could have stopped but you need to think that they didn't know what was going on. If I had been there, I would have pulled off and helped you. I rescue turtles and frogs in the road and I've found that a cup placed over a wasp or bee on a window pane or screen and then carefully sliding a sheet of paper between the cup and the glass or screen will allow for the capture and release of our necessary pollinators. We all have time to be kind. This world is not ours alone. Again thank you, Karen.
