To the Editor: Firepits not for debris

0

Nice weather has arrived. We can finally open doors and windows and enjoy some fresh air. On Sunday
afternoon, a nearby resident burned garden/yard debris in her backyard firepit and caused a great deal
of smoke in the neighborhood. She said she didn’t know she couldn’t burn debris. There are city
ordinances on the books, and rules established by the Fire Department which describe what kind of
firepit/outdoor fireplace is allowed and what can and cannot be burned in them. If you want to have a
firepit and don’t know the laws, please call the Fire Division. They will be glad to inform you.
Smoke from firepits/outdoor fireplaces should not infringe on people’s right to enjoy fresh air. Please
be considerate of your neighborhood when using them.
