To the Editor: Couple likes BG restaurants

In a recent letter to the editor, it was implied that Bowling Green did not have any suitable places to eat, because "travelers are looking for the consistency of a familiar brand name restaurant."
My wife and I live half way between Bowling Green and Perrysburg. More often than not, we choose to eat in Bowling Green, due to the quality of the meals, variety of food and preference to support local business.
I would invite travelers to enjoy the variety of foods available including, Italian, American, Asian, vegetarian, Bulgarian and even the taste of Ireland. We also have some of the best local pizza around.
Toledo and the surrounding area is saturated with generic and mundane chain restaurants owned by anonymous corporations.
We hope they stay there.
Come to Bowling Green to enjoy a restaurant where you can meet the owner and tell them how much you enjoy your meal.

Bowling Green is very lucky to have a broad range of quality places to eat. What is being lost on people is regardless of where you stand on big corporate chains, it is the chains and the potential franchisees decision where to go and invest their money.

Some, like Panera, have come to BG and done very well. Others have chosen not to. But it is their decision, no one else's.

You have it right Concerned. It takes the right chain to be successful here. They all could build along I-75 if they so choose. I know someone who used to work at one of the chains in Perrysburg area who said his company did not want another store that close to their other stores. So they are in Findlay and Perrysburg. Company choice, not the city of Bowling Green's.

And some have come to BG and failed miserably (Mancino's comes to mind).

I agree, we have some of the best, most original non-chain food around. Of course, coming from a Liberal (me), my opinion might be suspect, LOL.

Concerned-chain restaurants usually do a marketing survey and see about who actually would eat there and the ages and what-not. I think having the eateries along 75 would boost their sales, they will do research before they build. But I am saying the traffic could bring more people in.

On Friday (2/1/13) I walked in the freezing temps to go out to eat in downtown BG. We went in to China Village and no one came out to greet us. It didn't matter however as my son pointed out that the sign on the counter "CASH ONLY". I only had a credit card so we walked out. Then we went to Easy Street and saw loads of people standing waiting so we left there (we had time constraints). Next on to Call of the Canyon Cafe. Guess what? Sign on the door "CASH ONLY". Left there. On to Dave's Subs where they finally took my plastic. I don't know how many more restaurants are CASH ONLY but they lost my business.

We all may start to see more small independently owned businesses not accept credit cards, the Banks are changing how they charge for the service.

Guys! What's not to like about some of my favorite, really wonderful BG things: Reuben sandwich [Cosmos II]; tamales [El Zarape]; BLTs [Big Boy on N. Main]; Brown Jug steak [Trotter's Tavern]; chicken salad on cranberry nutbread [Call of the Canyon]; pancakes & crunchy corned beef hash [Corner Grill]; potato-crusted flounder [Bob Evans]; artichoke-spinach souffle [Panera]; chipped beef on toast [Kermit's]; Pagliai's Special pizza; liver & onions [Easy Street Cafe].

Although, it would be also nice if BG could come up with another Shambarger's [Redkey, Indiana]. Google it.

BG is big enough to have more chains. Yes we like our local ma and pa shops but we should be able to have it all.

Chains do a financial study on the area prior to building, that's the reason most won't come to Bowling Green, too many already in a concentrated area. It all comes down to the money. Bowling Green has a bigger population while BGSU is in session, but that is not 12 months a year, as for the most students here. These chains look at it for 12 months a year. That's the bottom dollar for this issue.
